Joe, I haven't heard of anyone crawling onto the ice yet. I don't work around any of my old ice fishing buddies anymore. My new ice fishing buddies live with me.
Here's one from last year on the pond at the house. His twin sister had just gone in the house for hot chocolate.
Hey I have two daughters that "separate" EVERYTHING...so my fathering eyes pick up on those subtleties!!!...so I have to ask...who has the 4 fish and who has the 5 fish!
Funny how a picture captures so much. just looking at it and if I remember right, at that point he had five, but my daughter was not wanting to let him count that little one. She really likes giving people a hard time and her twin brother is target #1.
My co-worker just said they are forcasting up to 8" snow here in Columbus. I love snow, but not when ice fishing is on the horizon. It tends to allow the ice to thaw from below on smaller ponds, especialy around the edge.
If I don't work Saturday I just may get after some whitetails instead.
If your kids are looking for options in school...I've got a bachelors of science in electrical engineering and a masters of science in computer science...prior to my "management" activities I've been doing for the past 16 years they actually allowed me to design circuit cards and write windows based software...I really enjoyed the design end of things and many of the engineers and PhD's I lead today forget I am a technical guy and not just some program manager so they find it hard to pull the wool over my eyes!!! There are still a lot of career options out there and mine like all of yours have provided for our families...there really is no wrong choice as long as folks are willing to work hard and give their all...I do notice that a lot of the younger folks we have been recruiting are more into the "what's in it for me" mindset than those of us that are more "experienced" in life (notice I avoided the "OLD" word!)
Hey Joe, do you think you could get me an interview for a co-op or an internship? I'm a Junior at IPFW studying mechanical engineering.

Do you recommend studs then? I was talking with a buddy about them a couple weeks ago.

For my application, and some definate peace of mind, YES! I drive a 50 mile round trip through hills and rural areas, so for me it is great. If you've never drove with studs, you would be astonished how they do. With ice picks on all corners they will even help me stop better on ice.
I have a set of rims for winter with the studded tires and a different set or rim/tire combos for summer.
So depending on what you are after, yes I recommend them. I'm on my 3rd winter on the Winterforce. Seem to be wearing good so far.
The only disadvantage with the studs is dry pavement going around curves and like at too fast a speed, I had them on a FWD car and it was a little unnerving at times...lol
