I was just looking at an other thread ..evedently this ford truck owner has a cracked filter adaptor ..My question is I have an adaptor on my 360 that was for a 2 wheel drive truck ..well as you guys/gals may know the power steering system on the pre '78? 4x4 trucks stinks so It has been converted it to a new truck stye box . (It works great by the way) ..well the bad news is that the stock size ford oil filter wont fit , so I was forced to find a different filter . I found a smaller filter that is desiged for a 351 in a ford full size station wagon . Well at an rate the engine runs great and the filter fits great . should I change this adaptor to the 4x4 type ( 428 filter down type) or just leave it ..will running a smaller filter damage the engine (I dont see how it is a motorcraft filter) ..and once again living up here in CT there is not alot of FE's rolling around so parts are kinda limited (there is always ebay!) This truck is currently not registered so it isnt getting any miles on it ( besides up and down my street) What do you guys think?
I don't know exactly how big the filter you are referring to is but if you think it is a concern I would change it out in between oil changes. It probably won't catch as much garbage as the FL1A. Filter size has little to do with how much junk it will hold. If it is getting full you would have problems. The purpose is filter area so you are bypassing less oil past the filter. I think it would be fine but like I say I don't know how big it is. I worked at the lube rack for quite a while and if it was a ford V8 it got an FL1-A equivalent unless it was a newer 351W or a modular. We did have a filter that was only slightly shorter that was for V8 fords but never got used as the book never called for it. You could buy one of those remote filter adapters.
I am not really that concerned with this set up ..this engine is new and so the junk that may be in the pan - isnt . I would really like to keep this truck as stock looking as possible ( dont point out the steering system lol ) The next time I go to the junk yard I'll look around for a differnt adaptor . this filter thats on the truck is about an inch shorter its the same is the FL1A but is just shorter . This lessens the total capacity of the engine to 4.5 quarts . This is good enough for around my yard but I dont think it would be good for higher rpms of interstate 95 ..Are these FE filter adaptor still available to buy new ? Yes this truck did come with the correct adaptor but it has been lost ( the old engine threw a rod so I junked it not thinking ) This new (rebuilt) engine was out of a '76 F250 4x2 that is why it has the wrong adaptor.
Dump it in there. Especially if you have done the oiling mods or take on some agressive inclines. The only tim you have too much oil is if there is contact between the crank and the puddle.

The machinist I worked with on my FE 390 recommended adding another quart just for the extra cooling, and like he said "You'll have the revs up high enough there won't be much left in the pan anyway..." - in my case, at least
Chas,
I purchased one of the 90* filter adaptors to go on my 410 about 8 months ago. It's a C8******** something or other, best I can remember. I think it's now designated as a 427 part, but fits them all, and naturally has the larger passages to complement the recommended FE oil mods. I got it from my local Ford dealer, they had them in stock, and think it was a little over $20. Might be easier than scouring the junke yardes!

Thanks Steve! I thought you could still get them new from your friendly Ford dealer.
