255/70-17 is 31.05 " tall, about 10.03" section width, and it makes 670 revolutions per mile
285/70-17 is 32.70 " tall, about 11.22" section width, and it makes 636 revolutions per mile
If your spedometer reads 60 mph at 60 mph true speed with the stock 255/70-17 tire .... it will read 56.9 mph at 60 mph true speed with the 285/70-17 tires and no other changes. In other words, you drive 60 by the speed in a marked 60 mph zone, no other changes and all is correct before the changeup ..... you'll actually be running 63+mph on the VASCAR or Radar. Probably not a problem if you keep speedo on same as signs .... but enough to cause a problem if you are used to running about what the tollerance level is? Maybe worth a sticky note for the G/F or wife to see?
I know the tire size you are looking at will fit easily, but in case you feel a little adventurous:
I read on another forum site that an 04+ F150 will accept a 33" tall tire easily, and a 35" with a front leveling kit. Just look at all that room you have already!
Thats only considering height though, so width would have to be watched for any rubbing on the front fender trim.
Then there is the issue of speedometer/odometer correction... easily re-calibrated with most programmers.
Good luck in picking out your tires! I need a set myself but waiting for tax return season so I can go 33" with some type of AT, or mild MT tread!
No such thing as a stupid question!
But to answer, I've never heard of any problems with the 4x4 by going up a few sizes with tires. As long as you have a complete matching set of 4 there should be no issue. I've heard of people using a different pair on front than on the back, but thats usually an ABS issue that may arise to make the truck/car handle dangerous in certain weather.
Welp the place I get my tires from finally found 4 Firestone Destination M/T tires 265/70/17,went and got them put on today, I'll just use them through winter then put my Bridgestone Dueler tires back on for spring/summer weather.....thanks for your input...
The Destination M/T is one of the tires on my wish list! I had a set of Destination LE on my old 4.0 Ranger and went through a lot of stuff. The LE is two steps away from MT, with AT in the middle for agressiveness.
So I'm thinking you'll be happy with the tread that the MT has to offer. I've heard only awesome reviews from various sites.
