I have a 5.4 2001 Excursion, no mods. It was bogging down occasionally at freeway speed and idle was slightly rough. I replaced the spark plugs and boots, the problem disappeared. A few weeks later it leaves my wife stranded at the store.
It cranked fine, but would not fire. I got it home and pulled the fuel filter and it runs fine. A few days later, it won't start again. I was not getting any gas out of the pressure valve on the fuel rail. I had a second filter on hand and switched it again. It fires up, but is hard to start. Have to tap the gas pedal to get it to fire. Runs great once its going.
Could it be anything other than the fuel pump at this point? I don't want to drop the tank if there might be something simpler to try.
These are classic fuel pump symtoms. If you don't believe me throw a fuel pressure gauge on it and when it won't start or bogs or dies out you'll see fuel pressure drop. Run the tank near dry before attempting to drop tank
