ok guys! i talked to the lady at aaa i told her everything and the problems i would face.i asked her to register my truck with the frame vin and she told me that there will no problem using the vin on the title.as long as there is that number on the truck somewhere.she said that they re-use the numbers several times as long as its before 1960.so she charged me 400 for title, plates, and stickers.400??californias going nuts! i talked to the sheriff and he is signing an affidavit stating that the truck had the vin and the title when i got it...so hopefully i wont be bothered...gotta get outta cali tho
the p owner said that they used the cab from the 50 and the rest fom the 51 but he was prob lying...by the way there is no J i messed up. i worked last night and had no sleep so
Agreed, the only thing 1950 would be the serial number plate, and maybe the glove box itself. As long as everything checks out with the DMV AND!!! authorities, then I'd say yer good to go. But remember, the authorities trump the DMV in any case.
Your truck will still be registered as a 1950 even though it's a 1951. I know that I wouldn't be able to live with that. My 52 was registered and titled as a 53. We all know that the body style is completely different. I had the year changed at the DMV by simply showing them how the VIN is decoded. My paperwork, though, matched the stamped VIN.
i will get the number right one of these days i just wanted to be street legal so i dont have to hide from chp anymore,,,the sheriffs are cool as long as i dont drive it outta town,,,but chp would had my a** in a platter by now....51 panel man how much did it cost to do that...and thanks every one i can drive this baby anywere now as long as it dont overheat i havent had the chance to hook the gauges yet,,,,havi ill puch as many people as i can for you at the concert....rock on brothers
This was a great thread for me. I had thought that I would have to buy a new frame or wait for the dmv records to get washed for me to title my truck I was having so many problem. po never registered in his name and his po is dead.
BUT called AAA and they will take care of all of it for $55.00 with a 2 year tag. Wonderful!
In my opinion, you're driving on thin ice. The lady at AAA is stupid and lazy, and doesn't have a clue as to the laws regarding legal vin numbers, which is the one stamped on the frame. That is federal law, period. FBI trumps AAA. She has no business doing that job. She screwed you as bad as your lying previous owner. All she did was transfer a title to your name. I'm sure a big chunk of that $400 was her fee to do that, which was a total waste of your money. It still doesn't change the fact it is a title to an entirely different vehicle. Your frame and cab, and it appears the rest of the truck, too, is all 1951. You were flim-flammed by the seller, who obviously knows a lot more then he's admitting to, and the myth was carried on by the AAA clerk. You really need to make this right sooner rather than later, imo. No matter how you slice it, you still do not legally own your truck.
well i will get that affidavit from the sheriff and ill take all the paperwork to the dmv and ill have them give me the right paperwork as far as im concerned i have a witness for all the transactions i have done and i will try my best to get it right but with time beign tight and a 2 year old that doesnt give a crap of what your plans are im happy with the half *** job aaa has done,,,so i tried to do my best for now,,,and if the dmv lets that kind of clerks and businesses handle this kind of work,,the dmv is to blame...
alcaeus you are lucky...i payed 18% of the price i paid for my truck so for 2500 i paid 230 dollars plus tags plates and the little fees california has,,,i am a member of aaa and there wasnt a fee for doing that(i hope)
ouch. Though with the amount of money spent on these trucks that may be your cheapest investment... I'm glad I'm out of California and baking happily in the Arizona Desert.
I agree with Wayne. You really should have the data all synched up correctly.
But the good news is that at least you have it titled in your name now and have plates, registration. And, you have a statement from Law enforcement that supports the current titling process.
Plus, you've paid your fees ($400? that's alot!)
After all the paper work comes in the mail, (and this is entirely up to you), you can always go to the DMV and tell them what happened and that you have since learned that the real vin on the frame is different and you'd like to have it corrected. There shouldn't be a problem - unless the truck was reported stolen and is still on the books.
They may just say "that's your new vin" and leave it at that. But probably you will have to fill out a VIN check request, Corrected Title request and Affidavit explaining what happened and have them correct it if they decide that's the right thing to do.
What ever you do, DO NOT loose or toss the bill of sale you have from the PO (if you have one). It's going to be hard for them to give you trouble about it since they flubbed originally and when you transered the first time!
I looked at your tag... Isnt Death Valley the second hottest place on earth? Ill keep my 114 peak in the summer. Though it was in the 120s in the 90s some time i think.
