351 water pump

How bad is it to change a water pump? What might I have issues with? What else may need to be removed. Trying to determine if I want to do it or if I pay someone to do it. How do I tell the difference between a standard pump and a heavy duty? Are reman pumps really any good?

91 F250HD, 4X4, 5.8L EFI, factory air conditioning.

Truck is squealing like crazy. Belt has about 3000 miles. Tensioner pulley has about 500 miles. Noise seems to be coming from center of engine. Long screwdriver - no noise from A/C, power steering, alternator, or air pump. Tried soap and WD40 on belt - no change. Squirted WD40 inside of pully on water pump - noise quit for a few seconds. No visible antifreeze leaks.

It does not take a lot of skill to change a water pump; just some tedious work. Off the top of my head, I can think of:

- remove the fan. This may require removal of the fan shroud, which may have other things attached to it.

- remove the belt.

- there may be brackets attached to the water pump, so you may have to first remove those, which may mean loosening or removing other accessories like the PS pump, AC compressor, etc

- remove the hoses from the pump

- remove the pump, scrape off all the old gasket from the mating surface on the front cover

- install new pump, and assemble everything else in reverse order

If you're not confident about doing this, it may be a good idea to pay someone qualified to do it.

I'm not sure about types of pumps to get, HD or not, but I've used reman pumps and had no problems. The best thing to do is to bring your old pump to the auto parts store and get an exact replacement. Sometimes they have the same part number for the two types that turn in both directions, and the only way to tell is to look at the impellers.
