i have a 2001 f-350 psd, 2wd and 4high work fine, but when i try to shift to 4low the shift motor makes noises trying to turn to 4low but goes back to 2wd position? (i took it off and can watch it trying to get to 4low position before returing to 2wd ) i then have to pull the GEM fuse out and back in to get 4high to work again,,, do i have a bad shift motor or any other ideas???? thanks
Part of the shift motor is a switch that essentially reports back to the GEM the position of the motor. If the switch doesn't indicate a complete shift, the shift is reversed. My guess is that the switch that indicates 4LO is not working, so the GEM never sees the completed shift and reverses it.
I don't know if the switches can be repaired. You may have to replace the entire shift motor. You might check the shift motor connections and wiring carefully first though, to make sure there is no corrosion getting in the way.
