Was on my way home from a work related trip yesterday. The truck has about 7K on it and has run perfectly since day one. Was cruising at 67/68 MPH and had been for a couple of hours. Moved into the passing lane to avoid a merging 18 wheeler. The dude came up to speed quicker than I anticipated so I'm trapped in the outside lane with all the crazies in their BMWs doing 95. Got a little mad and punched the gas - got the down shift and away I went. At about 75 to 80 the check engine light started flashing. As I pulled back into line and dropped back to cruise speed it went out and has not returned. Did all the standard checks per the manual but nothing seems wrong. Does anybody have any ideas or suggentions as to what to look for.
I had intermittent check engine light on my 94 4x4 XLT 4.0L 5Spd beginning at about 10k. My dealer checked for error codes in the computer and came up empty handed. Next, they installed the "flight recorder" a data storage device that was activated by the driver hitting a button when the check engine light came on. They did this because the onboard computer does not store all trouble codes indefinately. Of course, as luck would have it, 3 weeks went by with no light. So we removed the flight recorder, and as you may guess, soon thereafter the problem came back. I was even on my way to the dealer one day, and the light came on, I thought great, I'll pull right into service with the engine running and have them extract the error code. Well, the light went out as soon as I saw the big Ford sign on the lot. They plugged and, it showed lean on the left bank driving over 45mph, and the a/c had been on, but not enough info to point a finger at anything.
I tried different gas, no help. But..............what did help was putting a can of STP fuel injector cleaner in the tank at every oil change (3000miles). End of problem, even at 150,000miles.
How about a guess from a non-mechanic? Well here goes anyway . Is it possible that you maxed out on the RPM's or speed or something and maybe the engine speed/rev limiter caused the computer to set an error code, resulting in the check engine light coming on? Then after you drove a few cycles, the code went away, which is whay you haven't seen it again?
Thanks guys. Had a gut feel that it was something like an anticipatory over-rev warning. Feeling way more comfortable about that at the moment.
As an aside here, it's nicw to know that one can ask a question, and get an answer in real time here -- got to be the reason I signed up. Thanks again.
