I got a replacement "plug-in" speedometer cable from Carpenter's and since I could not find any guidance in my shop manual as to the correct way to install it, I wanted to see if someone could lend a hand. After I remove the plate that holds the cable connection to the transmission, do I need to remove the gear, insert it into the plug-in and reinsert into the transmission? This is the first cable of this type that I have installed and appreciate any guidance. Thanks.
Lightly lubricate the rubber "O" ring on the transmission end fitting. Jack the truck back wheels up off the deck (and secure off the ground with jack stands), and put the transmission in neutral.
Crawl under and insert the cable end into the transmission. If it doesn't go in all the way, turn the drive shaft slightly until the cable drops in.
Place the fork over the cable head and secure with the machine screw as in the pic:
