ive been driving my 85 f150 for awhile and have always had a problem with a sputter or hesitation while at cruising speed. ive removed the head cleaned everything and replaced all gaskets so im pretty much positive that there is no air leaks. im convinced that the problem is in the carb, which ive gone through before and installed a rebuild kit. im tempted to install a 2 barrel carb with an adaptor ive found. however ive read that my problem could be the ignition system. ive bypassed a lot of emissions on this truck and it makes sense that the ignition may be at fault. so which is the better start point, carburetion or ignition. ive heard of swapping in a duraspark ignition, not sure where to go. im really impressed with the power of the six, but as ive mentioned before i have a rebuilt 302 ready to go. anybody have any suggestions?
You have a six cylinder? Do you have a computer? Does your distributor have the ignition module mounted on the side with no vacuum lines going to the dist?
If you want to keep the six, than I would recommend swapping in a duraspark, or MSD setup, seeing as how there have already been some alterations to the stock system, especially since you are running the newer computer controlled ignition.
However, it could be something as simple as a funky egr issue.
You need to do something with the ignition system as was mentioned. Your timing is going to be out of wack along with everything else since it was all computer controlled. It all depends on how much stuff you have taken off the engine. The computer can't work right if you take some of that stuff off.
i think im going to go with the ignition swap, msd would be nice but ill probably try and find an old parts truck somewhere that i could rob an old ignition from. ill probably try going through the carb again also. i remember trying to remove the little module from the passenger sife inner fender, it has a vacuum line and a wire connector going to it. anyway i tried to run the truck without it and the timing advance was way off, couldnt get it set correctly without reconnecting the module. also i removed the already non functioning egr valve and capped it off.
was just digging through my junk parts pile and found a couple 2bbl carbs that i forgot i had. both were off of a 302 and i belive that i could adapt one of those to my 300. im curious how to attach the throttle cable though, anyone had any experience with this particular swap?
