well it appears that my thermostat in my transmission is stuck open.
towed home a 10,000# flatbed trailer today and temp stayed around 129f.
ambient temp 28f
my question is;
is it detrimental to the trans to run that cool? even during the summer months it generally stayed around 129f, stop and go it may have gotten as high as 155f for a short perion of time, but for the most part 129f seems to be the magic number.
after reading the above question where exactly is the thermostat located and how difficult is it to change?
truck is my '07 350 with 118,500mi., fluid has been drained and refilled every 30,000mi. and everything about the truck and trans has been flawless, minus ficm replacement last winter.
There is a reason Ford put an internal t-stat in the torqueshift tranny, app. 165 degrees. You are doing it no favor running it 60+ degrees cooler than the t-stat rating.

The thermostat is in the pump body. Once the trans is out of the truck and the pump pulled out it isn't hard to change. It's getting to that point that's hard!

Mark,
thanks for chiming in on this thread.
In your opinion do i have a problem or obviously i don't want to drop the trans. I remember last year this topic being broached and the 90f trans temp above ambient temp being discussed. is this a good rule of thumb?
towing i don't remember the temp ever being over 160f during the summer, and like i said earlier 129f seems to be the magic number summer/winter not towing, but hauling upto 4000# in the bed
But it is possible you just have a bad TFT sensor, and you can check that with your scangage. In the morning, before you start the truck, are your EOT, ECT, and TFT temps all about the same? They should be.
A TFT sensor is a lot easier to change than a thermostat.

Excellant point Bill and didn't see the trees for the forest!

sorry guys I should have listed all of the info in original post, all temps on a cold start are within a degree or two.
