Ive been planning a rebuild on my motor for a while now and ive been wondering since there is so many miles on my truck it is highly unlikely that i will be able to just rehone the cylinders and rering the pistons so would it be cheaper to send the block off to get the machine work done for a rebuild or just buy a short block does anyone have any advice on this my truck has 215k miles on it. Thanks Chuck
That depends on how comfortable you are with you abilities to assemble a motor. If you are comfortable, send the block out for machine work, get a kit and do the assembly yourself. If you aren't that comfortable doing the assembly, look at having the shop do it for you. A good shop will be able to build what you want and should be reasonably competitive on the price. Don't forget the heads too, at 215k, they are going to be due for some work too.
If thats just the machine work, that sounds awful high. If thats a complete short block, ready to bolt the heads back on, thats a bit more reasonable. Jasper lists their 5.8 at <table><tbody><tr><td nowrap="nowrap" align="right">Price: </td><td nowrap="nowrap" align="right">2285.00</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td nowrap="nowrap" align="right">Core Charge: </td><td nowrap="nowrap" align="right">350.00</td><td>
</td></tr><tr><td nowrap="nowrap" align="right">Skid Charge: </td><td nowrap="nowrap" align="right">15.00</td><td>
</td></tr><input name="sMLPS" value="" type="hidden"><tr><td nowrap="nowrap" align="right">Kit Price: </td><td nowrap="nowrap" align="right">347.00</td></tr></tbody></table>
That would be a Jasper ReMan long block, ready to throw your intake, exhaust and accessories on and drop right back in the hole. Back in Ohio, we installed a fair number of them and they were always dependable and backed their product up.
So you are looking at approx $465 on the bottom end alone, add another $325-400 for a rebuild kit (cast piston vs. hypereutectic)from someplace like Summit, and you've got $790 to $865 in the bottom end, add in another 200-300 to have the heads done and 70 or so for a good timing set, and you are looking at $1135-1235+ for the rebuild if you do the disassembly/reassembly yourself. Thats just a basic rebuild, no cam or extra goodies you may decide to go with, but its still $1300 less than the motor from Jasper (2300+350 install kit)
$1200 for a complete rebuild on my 351W, that included upgraded cam, valvesprings, retainers, locks, double roller chain, .030 over pistons, rings, bearings, oilpump, gaskets, frost plugs, machine work on the block, heads, and crank.
If the heads and block don't need a lot of work its cheaper. Take a lot of measurements and know what has to be done. If the motor didn't get hot, more than likely it won't need to be decked, or aline bored.
Yes my prices where cheaper than most, but I was also informed his prices would be going up soon.
my truck has been owned by older guys the whole time by a cop and a fireman both in their 30s/40s so they kept it in good shape and to have 214k on it and it still have the origional clutch in it i know they didnt hot rod it and took care of it
