Block Heater

As I as reading my book it says to use the block heater if it will be -10* F. Do you guys do it sooner than that? I has been cold here at my house and my Excursion is garaged. It was down to 2 degrees last night. Should I be plugging it in or not? What do you think?

Thanks,

I believe it depends on what temp you have trouble starting. but I seen people hook um up at 10 to 20 F. Just my .02 cents

I've never plugged mine in. It was hard to start at -16. We get a few months of cold temps here. I think the above post called it right.

Heck, plug it in. I plug mine in when it goes below 20F. It won't hurt a thing. Helps starting and also brings the interior temperature up earlier.

at work ( EMS / Rescue Squad), we start pluging up in late october / first of november. we have a small ceramic heater in the patient compartment that keeps the medications warm. and when we get a call ..it's 0 mph to out the door in under two minutes. the 6.0's don't like running when they're cold. all of our 7.3's are gone now, they would run somewhat better cold.

here the city runs a program called "plug at 20F" we have issues with air quality in the winter so thats why they make a push for anyone parking outside to plug in.

luckly i have a heated garage

i think setting it on a timer for 2-3 hours before your going to leave. anytime its 20F or less

Wanna bet? Look at your electric bill. Why do you think when I had to plug it in, I used a 2 hr timer so that it would turn on 2 hrs before I needed it?

Make sure to use a thicker gauge extension cord. Please don't use a tiny interior cord. The block heaters can pull some juice!

Block Heater

I use a Thermo Cube. It turns on the heater at 35 degrees and then off at 45 degrees. So if the temp falls below 35 degrees the heater comes on. I do have a timer on the plug. The timer comes on a couple of hours before I need to start the Ex. Having the Ex warm saves on the batteries and starters. I have a 7.3 in a 2001 Ex and a 99 F350. We plug them both in at night. We get pretty cold here in Northeastern California. I have found it really helps. Love my Ex.

Maybe it is because you are talking about a 1950 Ford Excursion? That is what your thing under your name says.

Whoops, you changed it. lol

I found the V10 makes a bit of a whine-grind when I don't use the block heater when it drops below 25 but mine sleeps outside. I appreciate the suggestion on a timer....will get one soon.

Ditto to that, block heater draws some serious electricity. When it's really cold here (Denver CO, say below 20) I'll have mine on a timer to turn on about 3 hours before I leave for work.

It's been very dry this year so far, so Ex sits in the garage a lot. I ride a bike most days, or the VStrom.
