I usually run stock tuning in the winter when it gets really cold out, works for me but not everyone I suppose. On long trips 400+ miles, I will flash the truck back to another program if I wish to do so.
What kind of temps do you see in Ohio? I've only had this baby since May of this year but the first time I had to start her up in 30 degree temps without being plugged in, that's when I started having troubles.

I got tunes off of them a couple months ago and my stock strat was VXCF9, but when I loaded the tunes I found they wrote the tunes under a VXCF7 strat because they didn't have the ability to write tunes on the VXCF9.
They may have updated their software and may be able to write them for VXCF9 now though.

That's exactly what I was afraid of! Hubler, have you contacted IDP at all about writing to the VXCF9 strategy?

i can't say if the VXCF9 will cure your problem there are many things that can effect cold starts (injectors, FICM, batteries, etc.) i know that strategy has safety checks in it relating to oil and coolant temps.
to bottles of Rev-X cost about what a new tune would cost. that's why i would ask eric @idp. they sell Rev-X too.
Injectors, FICM, and batteries were all checked the first time I had her in the shop for the stuck speedo issue and all was fine. I'll probably have them check it all again since she'll be out of service for a few days. I like some of the other features of the VXCF9 strategy they have come out with (turbo vanes sweeping at idol), so I'm not basing my decision to update solely on the fact of the inductive heating to alleviate the cold start issue.

I'm curious of the strategy they were written to but it's always good to hear a 6.0 is running to the owner's satisfaction. Can you check on that and repost your findings?

I'm having some really bad cold weather starts here in Wyoming, and believe me, it isn't even cold yet by our standards. If I don't plug her in, the starts are awful and it just plain doesn't want to drive until warmed up to over 100 degrees for EOT/ECT.
I'm at 4500 miles on the current oil change and I'm taking the old girl in on Monday to get the bed plate leak fixed and get the sticking speedometer replaced. Bed plate is under warranty, speedo is not . Obviously they will change out the oil, I'm running T6 synthetic and for this go round I have picked up a couple of bottles of Rev-X in the hopes that my cold starts are stiction only and will be fixed by the Rev-X. I'm also contemplating getting the stock flash update to strategy VXCF9. My problem is I have IDP tunes that are written for my current stock VXCF4 strategy. I have combed the forums up and down and still can't get a straight yes or no answer on the VXCF9 strategy.
Question #1:
Does IDP write tunes with VXCF9 yet?
Questions #2:
I'm in definite need of cold start help and VXCF9 is supposed to help with inductive heating, is it wise to update to VXCF9 or should I pin my hopes on the Rev-X?
I ask because I won't be charged for the flash update from Ford as long as the truck is in for other repairs. I also don't want to do myself a disservice with the update from all the negative reaction to any stock flash above the VXCF4 strategy.
Thanks all in advance for any insights and happy Thanksgiving!
My truck 06 f350, flat out sucks when its cold , basically im hitting problem with everything i can do this winter ordered welland glow plugs ,switched to 5/40 mobile 1, added 250watt oil pan heater,1200 cold cranking amp batteries, cetane every tank ,added updated ford fuel pressure kit,was going to update ficm to 58 volt but cant afford downtime to send it in right now , looking at adding ficm tunes from innovative but whats best cold start flash from ford any recommendations? ive ordered hot shots secret as well to clean injectors also here rev x is good product to try as well i sled alot in remote areas need everything i can to fire the old girl up at end of day These updated plugs offer a noticeable improvement in cold weather starting. They get 100 degrees hotter and do it in 20% less time than the OEM Plugs.

I just checked and the strategy that it shows with tunes loaded is VXCF7H3. Interesting. What are the differences between VXCF9 and VXCF7?
The PCM and FICM calibration update contains improvement actions to address the following symptoms:
False DTC P0470 - Exhaust pressure sensor A circuit fault due to a freezing condition.
False DTC P0404 - Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) performance due to a stuck turbocharger condition.
Cooling loss protection - Revised engine protection strategy when an engine over-temperature condition is present. Vehicles updated with this service calibration will display higher temperature gauge readings when high engine oil temperature (EOT) conditions or high engine coolant temperature (ECT) are encountered and may disable EGR operation to prevent possible EGR cooler damage.
Oil cooler efficiency monitor - DTC P012F stored and wrench warning lamp illuminated when the oil coolers efficiency drops below a specified threshold for a given speed and vehicle load condition.
Turbocharger vane sweep strategy - Performs a sweep of the turbocharger vanes and unison ring during stationary idle conditions. Vane sweep can occur once per hour to help reduce turbocharger sticking.
FICM low voltage detection monitor - DTC P0560 stored and wrench warning lamp illuminated when PCM vehicle power (VPWR) parameter identifier (PIDS) is below 10.25V for 60 seconds or below 9V for 4 seconds.
Turbocharger over boost detection - DTC P0234 stored and wrench warning lamp illuminated when a turbocharger over boost condition occurs.
For those of you interested and following this thread, my truck is now in the shop for the leak fix and speedo replace. I spoke with the service adviser about the cold start issue and we tossed around a few ideas. They are going to run diagnostics to be sure no issues are present with injectors, ficm, etc. They should call before deciding on a course of action but I did let him know that any software updates that might help are okay to apply, i.e. VXCF9 strategy, and will hope for the best. I'll continue to post up on this for those interested.
By the way, they gave me a rental, a turquoise Toyota Corrolla. I feel like I should be wearing an orange wig, rubber nose, big red shoes, and have ten other people exit the vehicle after me. I'm 6'4" and work construction so you can only imagine the flak I've gotten already when I pulled up to the office. But hey, I'm offsetting my carbon footprint for three days I guess!
I got my truck back from the dealership on Friday afternoon and I am now loaded up with VXCF9H7 for my strategy. Right away it ran much smoother than the previous stock configuration including the shifting so I am pleased. As far as cold starts, I thought I'd give her a test right away. Left it sit outside overnight in about 10-20F temperatures and each time she fired right up and ran smooth without any rough idling, even when the temp gauges read 20-30F on my Edge Insight CTS. I did 2 cold starts before adding my Rev-X and was pleased with just the strategy update results.
After adding the Rev-X, this thing starts like it's 70F degrees outside even when the entire truck was blanketed in frost! So far I am impressed with my results and I am happy I took her in to get the updated strategy. As for the Rev-X, I'm sold and will pitch in the extra $30 at each oil change to keep my baby happy!
Oh, and I might buy my wife some flowers, too......
