I'm the second owner, so I don't know if the parts were ever replaced, but the GPR and glow plugs haven't been touched by me. Bought it at 95k and now its 167k. Starts fine after sitting unplugged at 10 degrees all night. I run Rotella syn 5w40. Original batteries were replaced 2 years ago, that helped out quite a bit and was the only time I had cold start issues.
Original cold start equipment, syn oil, never plug in. No issues, but it rarely gets below 30F in TX. It DOES though, and I haven't had any issues when it has. I'm obsessed about keeping my battery terminals clean though. I run a lot of electronics in my truck and don't have time to screw around with crappy connections.
The other morning it was minus 28 celcius here, without the windchill, my truck has new batteries last year, as far as i know original glow plus, and relay, and it started up. I run 0-40 synthetic, and it did have the romps for 10 seconds, but that wasnt plugged in either!
I check the weather before i go to bed and plug in when it gets below minus 15 now!
I replaced my GPR with a Stancor last year just to do. I get the romps a little but I still run dino. Plan on switching to syn but by the time I need a oil change prob will be may.
Stancor GPR, dino oil, and almost never plugged in it starts just fine at the cool 40* it has been in the morning! seriously though during the winter when it stays in single digits the old girl can sit for longer than a week and it still fires up with pretty easily with little to no romps, but I do make sure the battery terminals stay very clean
Plugged truck up all last winter. Did some checking thru the summer, had a bad GPR. Replaced yesterday. Got it from Clay. 70 today 50 this morning. In the morning it is supposed to be down to 30. Will see then.
0* here and not plugged in and started like summer. I cleaned my battery terminals and installed new Diesel Rx glow plugs about a month ago. The plugs that were in the truck were still working but it wasn't starting like it should. The new Diesel Rx plugs have a dual heating element. They heat up faster and stay hot longer. A also run synthetic 15w40 year round.
220,000 mi, 5-40 Rotella, -5* not plugged in, starts up, no problems. I do try to plug it in when temps are below 20* just so it will warm-up a little faster but if I don't, I've never had any issues, knock on wood!
Truck is almost 9 years old, replaced GP's this fall and new GPR (Stancor) last spring. No cold start issues anymore.
And add to the mix, 5w-40 Synth oil and squeaky clean battery terminals...
I need to clean my battery terminals but will also probably be replacing them with upgraded connections for my planned stereo upgrades. Oh yeah, my truck is 12 years old too. Fresh/good GPs, Stancor GPR, fully synthetic oil, and a good strong starter are keys to good starting in cold weather.
Stancor relay, 2 yr old glow plugs. 15W40 Rotella oil, Never plugged in. In CO this holiday, started at 10F no romps. Interestingly enough, when I had my automatic pcm, I had romps when I started the truck in the same conditions.
My GPR just died, and my truck doesnt like to fire if its much cooler than 40 degrees.
Switch with AIH relay,... ??? just dont use the relay for AIH or do you add the GP wire to that relay?
Thanks
That's what I did, years ago and still running on the AIH relay.
I also, long ago, installed a manual push button for the glow plugs to extend glow plug life.
