the gauge is resistance based, i believe a cut wire to sender would thats OPEN would read full and a wire grounded from sender would mean empty CLOSED.
I just checked some of the ohms numbers. to check the sending unit I took the plug off the top of it and then put one lead on each post. I got 25 ohms and the tank is full. And for the guage I pulled the cluster out and unplugged the harnesses. I found the one yellow with white stripe wire and tried to test that and kept getting OL ( out of limts) I'm not sure but one lead from my meter goes to the wire being tested and the other to ground? I'm not an expert on resistance.

Yellow with white tracer goes to the tank selector valve. The valve switches from one tank to the other. The dark blue with yellow tracer is front tank and the yellow with light blue tracer is rear tank....
