E40D not engaging?

Parked one of the trucks in front of the shop to do some repairs (heater hoses and return lines/o-rings.) Didn't get to it, after it sat for a couple days, I needed something else closer to the shop, so fired the truck back up, let it run for a minute to warm a little, and shifted into R.....nothing. Strange I though, so tried F, and nothing. I checked the fluid, it was down a quart or so, so topped it up and tried again, still nothing.

It doesn't feel like it's doing anything, there's no lugging down the engine, no change in RPM, no slight movement of the truck. I haven't had a chance to check the linkage while someone else moves the shifter, so hopefully it popped apart somewhere. Beyond that anyone have any simple thoughts as to what it might be?

Check the oil level again.......

Could be an electrical problem.....

Special note:
To remove the solenoid plug, remove the heat shield."Do not use pry bars or screw drivers in attempt to remove plug" without shield removed.
Remove solenoid body connector by pushing on the center tab and pulling the wire harness.
Check for water/corrosion/missing pins etc....
To replace push down on solenoid connector until audible click is heard, then replace heat shield.

The other thing would be the shift lever sensor on the trans.......

Check fuses in cab and if it has trailer tow in the engine bay. Is the OD light bright when operated.

Cool, four things to check. I'll double check the fluid level again, then get someone to help check the linkage, then the shift lever sensor, and last the solenoid connector. Of course I woke up to about 3" of fresh wet white @#%#$% and this is the only plow truck that is actually ready to plow............

I read on the other diesel site that the E4OD transmission does not need its computer to shift in reverse, also it will move forward too if you manually place the shifter in low gear. I was bored one day and I so tried it by first starting the truck, then attaching a wire with "gator-mouth" clips to both the battery and the injection pump (supposedly this is a way to still get home in case of a major electrical problem), then turning off the truck with the ignition - engine stayed running like people said it would, and transmission did indeed shift in reverse and forward when I moved the shifter. Does that mean that electrical issues will not entirely disable the transmission? Is it possible that the shifter cable or rods somehow got disconnected on Greywynd's truck?

Neglected to go to my manual this morning for guidence.....

No electrical problem for no forward and reverse...

Fluid level and linkage connections are main concerns....... after that it appears internal things are the possible fault.

Well, I figured it out.....it was too low on fluid. Since the heater hose blew a couple weeks back, and it's low on antifreeze, I'd been only running it a few minutes, at a time, not long enough for the engine to overheat. Guess it was throwing the levels off on the tranny dipstick. Strange though, in the past when I've had a tranny get low it usually gives other indications....this one went from what seemed perfectly fine, to nothing.

Ah well, got it running and shifting just long enough to clean the white crap out of the driveway, and do a lineup picture of 3 of the trucks too.....

phew! always good when it's something easy.

once she warms up real good.stop on level ground, shift it into all the gears slowly and then check it again with the engine still running of course, and in park.
this will provide the most accurate reading.
just checked mine again yesterday too.all systems good.
now if she'll hold up to pushing some snow as good as it does twitching trees.
