2000 7.3 Powerstroke Woes...

Hey all...

Long story short, I let the girlfriend use my 2000 F250 XLT while I was out of town... I got a call from her saying there was an issue with the truck...Lost power, ran for scheisse, and tons of white smoke...Great. Why do these things occur when we're 2000 miles away ?

Of course, this was not her fault...in fact, I commend her on pulling over straight away and callin a wrecker to tow my truck to my mechanic. My ex-wife woulda driven it until the engine seized !

Anyways...After my mech looked at it he seemed to think it was a fuel issue. Wasn't poopy fuel. He reckoned it was injector seals. Replaced them, but it still ran crappy. Turns out that upon further inspection, 2 or 3 of the injectors were in bad shape. I believe he went and replaced them all with new ones. He called me and said that everything is runny ducky...except that it seems to take another 1-1.5 seconds of cranking to get her to start. He's looking into that now.

I can't get a ballpark answer on a price and it won't be done til probably after the Thanksgiving. Does anyone have a ballpark estimate on replacing fuel injectors and fuel injector seals ? I have a feeling I'm going to get quite a shock...

Thanks

I guess it will all depend on how many kids he has to buy for at Christmas
Not being smart here but that can be a high priced bill if he is crookedGood luck.
Not sure if there many here that can guestimate that because most of us do our own work here and with fella members.

Luckily I have an honest mechanic who is also a friend of mine...He won't do any more on the truck than needs to be done and charges accordingly. He's replaced all my HPOP seals a couple years ago...AND the stereing column wiring harness (cruise, horn, etc.) AND the Speed Sensor on the rear diff...final price tag for all of that (including parts) was $303.00 ... not too bad...We''ll see about the injectors though. lol

I was looking on ebay for parts prices and they seem to be all over the board...and pretty pricey. Even rebuilds are pricey. My mech said he was able to get brand new ones for pretty close to the rebuilds so he went for them.

What is the going rate for new injectors ...set of 8 ? And approximately how many man-hours to replace ?

Thanks !

Thanks !

I'd call Rosewood Diesel and I wouldn't even think twice about it. From what I can tell, they have a spotless reputation. They can even rebuild and flow test YOUR injectors if you have time to wait.

My $0.02.

Edit: I see that you already bought injectors. Never mind!

To replace 8 injectors is about an 8 hour job if all goes well. At $50 an hour that's $400. A new set of 8 injectors can range from $1000 to $2500. I'd say you're in for about a $1750 bill.

Ouch...kinda what I figured. Luckily, my dad gave me a "10% off" coupon for my mechanic that he got from a church benefit...That 10% could really turn out to be a chunck of cheese after all ! LoL

I should get her back today, with a bit of luck... I'll keep you all posted

Thanks again !

Silly question, but did she put gas in it? Mine did the same thing, white smoke, ran like crap and loss of power when unleaded was accidentally put in it.

Absolutely not...the gf is a trucker's daughter and knows better. My first thought was actually tainted diesel...but it checked out okey.

HPOP oil level. When tou go in to replace the injectors and glow plugs....you lose a little oil as it drops down into the cylinders.

The hpop could be draining back a little causing the level in there to drop just a touch... enough to cause longer cranking to get the oil built up enough to fire the injectors.

What are the consequences of this?

alldata says:

5.2 hrs 'standard time' for replacement of both sides. so yeah, I'd say most shops will charge between 5-8 hrs for the whole job.

The oil getting into the cylinders? Nuttin. Just a little added smoke first couple of times starting it after the repair. It clears up quick.

Low oil in the HPOP? Addition wear on the starter for having to crank longer before enough pressure is built up to fire the injectors.

Consider getting stage 1 injectors or at least hybrid split shots, def improvement over the stockers.
I bought Swamps stage 1 175/146 single shots, they are great over stock! ($1575) all new
I did have to have Jody reprogram my F5 chip, around $125
good luck Scott
call me when you get back!
You can call my guy Tim out in Hampshire, he replaced my leaky oil pan and installed new forged rods
