Has anyone tried to correlate whether this is a pre or post break-in issue? In another thread there was talk about the break-in period being lengthy for the engine. Does this hold true for other parts of the drivetrain? Just like the engine, the tranny is a complex piece of flying metal. Just curious if this is part of what is going on...
Having driven a new Ford every year for the past 23 years (company cars), I can tell you I have seen my fair share of 1st year issues. Most of the later model year issues appear to be corrected through changes in PCM programming. This past year I received a notification for reprogramming the PCM for shifting issues on the Escape I was driving. This corrected the issue and I can't help to think that this is where this may be headed.
I found out today there was a TSB released Wednesday to reflash the TCM.
I don't have a number but I'm sure someone around here has that information.
I'll see if I can get this done in the next week or two and we'll see what happens related to this inconsistant shift pattern.
What is a "harsh shift"? I like it when my truck changes gears forcefully. I hate "mushy" shifts
When I use the term harsh shift, it is exactly the term Ford used to describe the problem. When I took my truck in for the upgrade, they gave a piece of paper back that spelled out what procedure they performed and the reason for the TSP. On the handout the service writer gave me it said the flash was to: 1. increase HP & torque, (yay!!!) and 2. address the harsh shifts that have been reported. Furthermore, the handout states they have had the same shifting issues since '09. The tranny performs flawlessly when under load or constant accelleration. Which is most of time!!
Just following this thread now, as I've had the same slipping issue sporadically (at least once every week or two). It will get caught between, I believe, 2nd and 3rd gear and basically go into neutral until I let off the pedal. Interested to see if there really is a TSB about this. Thanks.
The TSB that I have seen so far is for an exhaust leak problem. I'm going to ask around today and see if there are any new TSBs out for these trucks. Unfortunately the TSB section on this site doesn't seem to have been updated since 2009.
I got my truck Wednesday evening, and I have experienced it twice in that short period of time. I believe Ford has a problem here and needs to address it. It isn't something I should have to, but nor want to live with. Hopefully the update mentioned earlier is released for this issue, and if not, then Ford should be working on one.
Doug with Go-Go Diesel came through for me. Here is a link to the full TSB that he posted up a few minutes ago. It appears to address a number of issues and supersedes the former TSB on transmission issues.

Awesome info!!!!! Nice to have somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody..... Will have to check with Jake when I get home next week and see about the latest and greatest.
IMO your truck probably has already been updated b4 it left the mothership.
Yeah, that's why 'it figures'... apparently the 2nd -3rd shift (dropping into Neutral) problem wasn't fixed...
Maybe this update didn't address this particular problem, the description didn't mention dropping into Neutral as a symptom. I wouldn't call it a harsh shift, I'd call it a MISSED shift. I mean it doesn't slam into 3rd, it goes into Neutral, and then back to 2nd.
But, as the thread shows, the problem is common. I hope they address it.
Same issue has happened on my truck several times. 2nd to neutral then 3rd. Happens mostly before tranny has reached operating temp.
Going to the dealer next week for the 3k oil change and hopefully a solution in the form of a new flash from ford.
