How do you know if its time to have the IP and ejectors rebuilt? What are the symptoms other then decreased power? I don't have a reference point to go by as far as the power is concerned. The truck had around 180k on it when I bought it and it only has 8000 more on it now. It seems to be lacking in power but I don't know how they are supposed to feel when new, I've never driven a new IDI. I was only 18 when the last IDI was made. I do know that the PO had the IP rebuilt and ejectors replaced once but I'm not sure of the mileage when that was done.
white smoke on the exhaust. crappy acceleration. you can get the injectors pop tested to find out if they are getting weak. take 1 down, usually the rest are about the same condition.
As time goes by the injectors will be slightly less effective..... ie spray pattern and fuel break point (squirt pressure) will decrease. With that will come a change in engine timing, although the timing was set to spec the injectors are not in line with timing anymore.
Most folks used about 150K miles as time for IP and injectors to be addressed.
I would think yours may have been done already..... sometimes if the injectors are NOT grey in color they are new/replaced. The IP would have some extra stampings on the body indicating it was rebuilt. Some rebuild shops use tags others use stickers to denote who they are.
I have a couple of days off over Thanks-giving, I need to dig out the PO's maintenance log and see if I can figure out the mileage when he had it done last. The IP was giving me some fits for a while but Sea-foam seems to have cured it for now. It just seems like the truck should have more power then it does. It doesn't smoke after it warms up a bit. When it does smoke, its gray. Under heavy load it will roll a little black cloud but not a smoke screen. I have a new return line kit but I have been holding off on putting it on because I've been trying to decide if I want to spend the money on a set of remain injectors. The truck is my daily driver now so I can't do anything that puts it out of commission for more then a weekend.
