I am looking for a crankshaft for a Tecumseh HM80-155630W. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a decent used one? I got the engine for free since some idiot tried to start the engine with a impact gun cause the rewind broke. I found new ones for around $150.
If you have access to a lathe (metal!!) you can save that crankshaft!
When I was in High School (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth), I was one half of a team (Dad and me) that broke the threads off of a Tecumseh 10hp lawnmower engine. (Where the rewind starter was.)
I took the engine apart and took the crankshaft to school, and the machine shop teacher chucked it into a lathe and cut the 'crank' even, and drilled and tapped the top end of the crankshaft. (Don't recall what size. 3/8" bolt, I think!)
I put the engine back together and used a Grade 8 bolt to put the starter, etc. back on.
I'll have to keep that in mind. I know a good machine shop, but their rates are high (but you get what you pay for) I just finished tearing down the engine and it is a shame. Not sure how old it is, but there is barely any wear inside. This guy was a moron.
Granted, this was YEARS ago, but, it shouldn't take more than 1/2 hour to do what I described.
Charge-back/Labor charges will probably dictate at least an hour.
So, whatever an hour's labor in your area is. . . it should still be less expensive than a crankshaft.
Or, bite the bullet and get a new crankshaft, a new connecting rod (I wouldn't put an old connecting rod on a new crankshaft), seals, gaskets and put 'er back together!
What's it's application? It looks like a basic small 1 cylinder gas engine. If your application doesn't specifically need that engine, you can buy reman engines for like $250-300 and have all new parts. At the time you're looking at rebuilding one you can have a new one already built for the same price. I've been through this before. Spend money and put work into a small engine to find out I could have had a new one for less.
If you're gonna rebuild it, you should probably try to get the crank cut and salvage it.
It is for a Agri Fab yard vac/shredder. If the engine inside wouldnt look so new, I would look for another engine. But considering I got it for free, I dont mind spending a little money on it. I know it ran perfect before this. The previous owner was just to lazy to get a new pull string for the rewind and decided to use a impact gun on the nut. Snapped the end of the crank off. It is an 8HP engine to, so those cost around $400 or more (I would only get a Honda as B&S suck) New seals and gaskets for the Tecumseh would be under $10, so my major expense would be a new crank.

Well, as for Briggs & Stratton engines, personally, I like them a LOT better than Tecumseh!
That, plus the fact that Tecumseh is now defunct, from what I hear. (Even though some parts are still in the system.)
Don't have any experience with Honda (small) engines.
B&S has done alright by me.
I've got some B&S engines that are 30+ years old and still run, & quite well, too!
Tecumseh stopped making engines around 2008/2009. After some investigation mine is a 2003 year engine. The roofing company I used to work for had some B&S and lots of Hondas. Both went thru some major abused and the Hondas would always last and hold up. The B&S wouldnt. In fact the owner put Hondas in place of the B&S. I also helped maintain a fleet of equipment for a tree nursery and landscape company and again the Hondas would always hold up to the abuse.
