Hey
I'm sure this question has been asked before but I havn't fond the link. How do you check the glow plugs on 1989 7.3 IDI? If you have a link or quick instructiuons greatly appreciated.
Also recently going down hill if I use the trottle a little heavy to gain speed the engine white smokes a bunch. I know its unburned fuel but how can I fix this? Couls it be the injector pump? It has a the auto trans. I have a rebuilt pump laying around and wondering if putting it on would solve this problem. The pump on now is original and never was touched in its 170000 miles. Could a run of injector cleaner help??
The smoke could be worn injectors and IP. Does it smell of diesel fuel?
to test the glow plugs:
Disconnect the wire from the end of each plug.
Using a ohmmeter check the resistance between the hex on the plug and thebullet connector.
A good plug will have a resistance of 1 ohm or les, but not 0 (dead short)
If you don't have a multimeter you can use a test light.
-Clip one end of the test light to the + battery terminal
-Touch the other end to the disconnected glow plug tip (where the 'bullet' connector goes)
-If it lights the GP is probably good.
Another sure fire way to test them is to take them out and use a battery charger to light them up. Use the - cable on the body of the gp and the + on the connector portion. If it glows red hot they are good.
the exhusr doesnt have much of a diesel smell just a strong exhaust smell. it does have a fuel smell to it but not that of fresh diesel like from a pump. The fuel is new so I know thats not the problem. Today it started to give exhaust smoke just idling at the stop light. Seems like whenever the engine isn't under load it starts to smoke. Although i also reved it high in neutral today and it white smoked alot. I dont have a turbo so would this be the reason its white and not black smoke?? I dont think the turbo would change the smoke color but not realy sure. Thanks guys
