Question Glow Plugs

ok so whats the deal on glow plugs. i came from a 7.3 turbo IDI and there was tons of posts about glow plugs, how to check them how to replace them what to replace them with etc. now the 6.4 starts AMAZING compared to the ole IDI i assume it has 8 glow plugs? has anyone ever had to replace any? is there a certain brand to stick with or stay away from? thanks guys, i know its not an issue but curiosity got me.

Still eight plugs. Not sure of the design changes or not.

Seem pretty dependable on the 6.4. I can't recall anyone having any issues with them myself.

Maybe others will chime in.

Also keep in mind that high pressure common rail fuel injection really helps with the cold starts too.

I've read a lot of posts on several forums and I don't recall reading a single glow plug issue post. 26,000 PSI electronically controlled injection does indeed do a lot to help cold weather starting. My truck started perfectly normally after a 0F night without the block heater.

so is it safe to assume that if you have a glow plug fail the glow plug light would not stay on as long like my past diesel?

You would throw a code and probably a check engine light.

Glow plugs will still stay on a bit longer in the winter time. They also stay on for up to 2 minutes after starting the truck. You just don't see the light.

Now that fuel is under such high pressures, it heats up from the pressure hence the need for a fuel cooler. Glow Plugs might not be used as long after cold starts.

truck threw the code for cyliner #2 glow plug (P0672)and the code won't clear. is this a replacment i can do in the driveway or should i take it to the mechanic/dealer? the guy at my tire shop who read the code and said it was likely an over-amperage issue whereby the plug hasn't failed yet but probably will. if it fails, can other damage occur? thx
