I know this probably a pretty basic question, but I just got some add a leafs installed and summit sent me the wrong front shocks. Over the next few days I cleaned and did the front wheel wells with POR15. I took the shocks off. I have to bring the truck down the road for an alignment on Wednesday. Can I take it down the road without front shocks?
heck i been driving with 1 shock on the front for years! instead of using the factory mount i just welded a mount in the middle so i can save some $$ by only using one .
I would say they are there for a reason. I'd say don't do it. Depending on your new shocks this could affect the alignement if you put them on afterward.
Okay maybe i'll just push the date of my alignment to thursday. the shocks should be here Wednesday. I don't want to mess anything up. Even if it is only a miles down the road. I wasn't sure if it would affect my alignment?
I don't think shocks will affect the alignment. I would think it would have the same caster/camber no matter what kind of shocks or lack of shocks you have
Being that your truck is a 3/4 ton, the suspension is probably stiff enough
that the shocks dont do that much anyway.
I got an old 1940's 3/4 ton, there's not much left of the original shocks,
and it rides fine.
to make habit of driving without shocks would be insane from a safety view point .a short trip driven carefully should be ok but should check with front end shop as to having any efect.
Sure you can drive without shocks. And you can do your own brain surgery too.
The shocks are there for a reason. They take the road hit and transfer it up to the frame. Without them the suspension rubber has to absorb it all.
You won't do much harm going around town for a few days without shocks but get them in as soon as you can.
A good front end mechanic and shop take their job very seriously as what they do has a huge impact on the safety of ALL drivers on the road. If their job is done incorrectly they will have a liability on their hands. Someone driving an unsafe incomplete vehicle is certainly a choice of their own but the shop can't make this choice for others. They will most likely pull the truck right back outside and charge you for the alignment as they could have been working on someone elses vehicle. I would not want to be in a wreck with injuries and property damage to be found with any parts having to do with safety missing? It could very likely change who is found at fault and liable.
