I currently own a 1992 Ford Aerostar XL Extended with the 4.0liter. I think it is quite a beefy powerful van and it is strangly fum to drive, but I need the wire color for a tachometer to the coil, i dont know if there is an actual tachometer wire coming out of the coil or if i should just use the negative (-) wire from the tach, the problem is the aerostar is SO CRAMPED i cannot get to the negative wire to the coil or cut the wire harness far back enough to find it, i am going to have to splice farther up, all the wires goto a harness up near the top of under the hood. I need to know what color wire the negative or tach wire is PLEASE! Thank you so very much if you could help me out with this problem!
I have a 94 short AWD with a 4.0 l engine. I hooked up a tach a couple of years ago. I had a hard time finding which wire. I went to a local ford dealer and asked around in the service bay, and lucked out talking to a guy that installed remote starters. Anyways I spiced into a brown or tan coloured wire on a fairly large plug that goes into the passenger side of the engine compartment beside the air box. It is the second wire from the rear end. The tach has worked well.
I will definantly try that, my method was just to go through each wire in each harness so far and that hasnt been the best method! Half of my wires have electrical tape around them, Thank you. If anyone else also has a suggestion or a different way, feel free to reply! Thank you again!
Probing wires by stripping insulation off them is a pain in the butt. One good troubleshooting trick is to stick a pin (sewing pin) through the insulation and probe that. Faster and saves a lot of electrical tape.
Thats a great tip with the sowing pin, i wish i would have thought of that one before, my aerostar now has a nice tachometer wired up so I dont blow up my engine! I know I shouldnt but I do nice Posi Burnouts with my Aerostar, 3:73 Posi is a great differential and I am amazed the Aerostar came with it so low! Well, Thanks!
