I have a 79 f100 (2wd) that I bought in July that I am slowly restoring. The body work is on its way to getting finished so that means that it is time for me to start worrying about engine things. This is a f100 "Custom" with the 300 i6, 3 on the tree. Here are my ?'s
1. What gear ratio do you think I might have?
2. Do I have a 9" rear?
3. Where might I get a fiberglass cowl hood?
4. Should I swap my 300 for a 302 or build the 300?
5. How hard is a 302 swap? or How readily avaible are performance parts for the 300?
I want this truck to run 15's or better so the engine is very important to me. Thanks in advance.
You can put in a 351W and change your gears to get in the 15's or better. My truck ran a 16.2 last summer with the stock 2.75 rear end, this year it will have a 3.50 LS rear before I try again. Your truck might have the 9", can be identified by removable carrier, otherwise it has small Dana, has removable cover plate on the rear of the axle instead.
To see what rear end your truck has now, either get the code off the door tag and post it here and we can tell you what it is, or jack up your rear end and spin a wheel and count the driveshaft revolutions.
I am 99.8% sure I have the 9" rear. I will find the code this weekend and post it. As far as the 351W goes: I know where I can get one and I know a guy that will build it for me. But, will I have to change my tranny? I was hoping to keep the same transmission. I have already replaced the clutch and I have the kit to make it a floor shifter.
