What color was the coolant before you drained it... in your 2001 ? Your system holds 32.75 quarts, including heater..

Don't go buying that Prestone stuff, you need the heavy duty antifreeze. Edited, if it had the green stuff you gotta put green antifreeze back in, with the SCA additives I believe. Some guys changed to ELC but some say its not a good idea.

If you have completely flushed the system (including the heater core) then you can use the Extended Life Antifreeze if you wish. The benefit is that you won't have to check your SCAs for a long time (if ever). If you haven't flushed it out then you should continue using the original "green" style. It's not extended life but still lasts 3 years or so. The issue with the original green style is the SCA level, which must be maintained. I still run the original style and check my SCA level every 15k miles (when I change fuel filters).

The NAPA brand says Fleet Charge on it so you want to use that stuff or something that is designed for diesel engines. Other key words are "Pre Charged" or "Supplemental Coolant Additive" (SCA). You can buy it pre-mixed (50% coolant/50% water) or you can mix it yourself. If you mix it yourself, use distilled water. Should be in the drink isle at Wal Mart for about $0.65 a gallon.

If you use the pre charged coolant, then you don't have to worry about SCA levels for 15k miles or so. If you go with Extended Life coolant, then I believe you are good to go and shouldn't ever have to check your SCA level. Can someone confirm this for me please?

Here is some info on the additive and testing process.

Yes, if your engine and heater and lines are completely free of coolant, then by all means use an ELC coolant to refill. This is assuming you have a late 99+.

I just replaced my water pump and decided to flush my system again since it's been 40K since my last one. I used the Chevron Delo ELC which is good for 750K. There's also an additive you can get for it to push it to 1 million miles if you feel you need it. It's pretty much the same price as others so I now don't have to change out my coolant until I rebuild it (unless something breaks).

Works flawlessly, just what it advertised to do, your going to like it alot, especially if you tow. Great EGT managment and flows a ton more air plus the whistle is sweet. Burke, what year is your truck?? If you had the green coolant in there I thought you were limited to the green only!! It was only if you had the gold-yellow coolant like mine you could change to ELC. Do a search on ELC and most of the green coolant guys are warned about this switchout of coolant.

It seems to be one of those "depends on who you ask" type of things. I switched to Delo ELC in both the trucks. ('00 and '01) Both came with the green coolant. The early 99's can have issues switching to an ELC, though some still run it. Read through this link and make the decision for yourself. Any coolant rated for diesel applications will work as long as you keep maintaining it.

Edit: Read posts 4,5,7,8. the first post is procedure instructions and pretty long.
