I have a 86 F350 crew cab 2WD dually with a c6, 30 in. tires and 4.10's. What will my mileage difference be with a zf5 conversion or E4OD conversion with same gears and tires? thanks, mike
If your talking fuel mileage, it will vary alot depending on the engine condition and driving habits. Basically with o/d the engine will be as efficient as driving around using 500rpm less at highway speeds.
Personally since I at the time just rebuilt my C-6, I found a deal on a GearVendors style O/D. No wire harness or computer and I kept the auto so no shifting or expensive clutch components. This worked for me, so many have there opinions. It's really up to what you do with your truck and what your capable of. In my situation my fuel mileage at highway speeds went from 13.5 to 15-16 mpg.
I vote C6, keep your foot out of it and a master rebuild kit is around 150. Rebuilt at a shop for less than 600. No switches, wires just some vacuum. If i had the cash to put into a solid rebuilt E4OD, i would do that but i would get a stock rebuilt. Manual is ok but then there is all the extra stuff to install and maintain. I fetch 16mpg on average. That is with a failing IP so we shall see when its fresh, just gotta stop myself from turning up the fuel too much haha. I vote keep it simple and i never need to go more than 60. If i live in the city and need a faster care for the highway i dont take the truck, i use the wifes van.
Going with the Zf-5 speed there are some issues to brought up. Fire wall flex, clutch pedal assembly bushing wear and dual mass fly wheel which should be replace with the clutch. A $600 added cost at the time 7 years ago. I was getting 21-23 on average on the highway with my 6.9l and Zf 5 speed and 4.10s 4x4.

whats your average speed?
how is the truck used?
you don't need to travel very fast for overdrive.mine kicks in around 40/43 mph going easy.
with 4.10's and 30" tires you could see overdrive at 40 mph easy id think.
ditching the old 3speeds for overdrive trans,is likely the largest fuel economy increase mod you could do.
especially if you travel over 55mph on average.
if your not hauling/towing heavy, consider a 3.55 gear swap too.you wouldn't think you were in the same truck then.
don't mess with the 4.10's though if you hook onto a 5ver.they make all the difference in the world if you have a use for 'em.
the duals cost you 1-1.5mpg too over SRW.
wow so maybe i can get 20 with the crew cab dually and 5 speed/?
it depends the re is a lot of factors like age of ip injectors condition of engine and condition of driver ie if the driver has too much lead and bull***** mpg goes down
mainly i do alot of 60-65 mph freeway, i do pull a load like 6k once in a while. What do you think of just changing to 3.31 gears? Can i still pull a load? also, i have 215 wide tires
I have 3.08s but rarely tow that much but most of my miles are towing around 2000lbs at 65 MPH. However you have smaller tires so the gearing is really killing you, I suspect 65 is actually your top speed (~3300 RPM). For highway driving you will be just fine and also gain the ability to drop a gear at mild speeds on some hills so you will still have the final drive ratio to keep you moving.
What you need to watch out for is operating on very steep inclines where you may run out of torque if a trailer is attached. I only had that happen to me once while trying to back a trailer up a steep ramp.
If you can live with that slower launch off the line and spend most of your miles on the freeway, then 3.31 gears should do nicely and its cheaper than a transmission swap. When I went from 4.10 to 3.08s, my mileage jumped from 13 on a good day to 16 average.
