Question Speedometer is not Working

Back in August i put a lift kit on my truck and have not had the time to drive it since i have been in college and i left the truck at my dad's house. I went back on the weekend and it fired right up but when i drove it the speedometer did not work. I checked the cable and it was still connected, but i did not have the time to check the actual speedometer gear. My dad said he used the truck to pull the old chevy out of a rut. Is it possible that he broke the speedometer gear when he put the truck into 4 wheel drive when he was stopped. The truck is 1969 Ford f-250 highboy.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Detach the cable at the transmission and check the gear teeth. Also, while it is out, spin the gear by hand and make sure the needle on the speedometer gauge moves.
