Engine options....

So i was planning on putting a 514 in my truck but i have thought about it and dont think i need that big of a motor. i think im either going to do a built 400 or freshen up a 460 to put in there. Which motor will have bone crushing torque (to out pull all the chevys) but still have decent mileage and not cost a fortune? the truck already has a 400 in it by the way.....

Thanks for any help.
Justin

Probably cheaper to make your 400 flex a little muscle than to swap to 460 and build that. That is unless you have hopes to build that 514 one day. There's obviously more potential with the 460 but thats not to say the 400 cant be built to some pretty ridiculous numbers too. In the Engine masters challege in 08? a john kaase 400 won with like 620hp and a 660ft lbs. And it's cool to see something that not everybody else is running.

400 400 400! All I'm going to say, well not really. I responded to your last post, so I don't mean to try to drive it into your head, but... Get some Aussie 2v heads, maybe stroke it to 434, and then do a normal really aggressive 400 build, and it will blow you away, and be a little bit more fuel efficient than a 5anything (though I certainly don't promise much). The built 400 is SWEET. I'm puting a 4v closed chamber Cleveland headed 408 in my truck right now and I can't WAIT to hit that pedal. The Cleveland is one of the most respected performance engines Ford ever made, the 400 has the longest stroke, combine them and WOW! Also, the 400, simply unbogged from all the stuff of it's time (bad timing, smog mess, restrictedness top and bottom) makes a very good engine for a truck, and with some compression work (new pistons) it can rip, even with stock heads.

Get back to me if you want a detailed build sheet with costs. I just made several for my project, so it could give you an idea of stuff at least.

TMeyer, Inc. Precision Automotive Machining You can ask Tim about what you want to do with that 400, and what fits your budget. Great guy, and he's the one with the 434 stoker kit.

Just remember, there will ALWAYS be somebody out there with a bigger budget than you and will thus make more power than you. If you try to be the fastest and most powerful you'll run yourself into the poorhouse very quickly and will find that you never even came out on top to boot.

Simple fact...there is no replacement for displacement. A 460 swap isn't that hard, or even that expensive. I do love 400's, and even though they can be comparable, they are still a step below in the power department. And the 460 has much more untapped potential.

Kaase has won with a 400 3 years running. That said, the engines he throws together are for competitions, not street use.

You want bone crushin' torque? Go Cummins!!!! Visit this website for inspiration: fordcummins.com - Increase Horsepower with Ford Cummins Diesel conversion kits

I'm sure the rotting carcass of a mid-90s Dodge is lurking somewhere in your neck of the woods......

It's easy to find a Dodge that's not worth driving, try the Dodge dealership.

I would just stay with the 400. Change the cam, pistons(flat top) and intake and call it a day. It doesn't take much to beat a Chevy.

I'm gonna vote 460. A 460 swap is simple. The only items I bought for my 460 swap were L&L headers and L&L motor mounts. Even if you would build both motors to the same specs bigger is better.

X2 on the cummins! Kidney jerking torque, reliable as heck, parts availability is awesome, and high teens to low 20's for fuel mileage with an overdrive transmission. Sounds like a winner to me.
