Ok men. Getting clutch noise in my 02 f250 7.3. its a 4x4. I was told by the clutch man that it is the pilot bearing that is going bad. i was give a quote of 1500$ for the whole job. using the kit from Luke. Is that a fair price?
And does my truck have the two piece flywheel? He thinks so but some one else says it doesnt.
Help Joe
Are you doing yourself or having it done? Do it yourself, a Southbend kit will run you $400 without the flywheel and about 550 for the kit with the fly wheel. It is about $400-450 for a shop to install it for you. So it does seem a little high, you should be looking at about $1100 max.
Here is a link for a Southbend. Riffraff Diesel: Single Mass
The clutch places i talked with seemed unsure about that. I even heard that Ford is unsure, even if you give them the vin number.
Anyway, i did some checking around and got a couple of better prices. 1055$ with a flywheel resurface or 1142$ if it needs to be replaced. Not cheap but better then the others! I like this guy and his upfront quotes either way. He said that that is with the Luke clutch kit. So i guess the kevlar pilot bearing is aftermarket and can be used if there is damage on the shaft?
Forgive my questions, i have never had to have a clutch done before. Joe
The ZF-5 transmission on the OBS trucks came with a dual mass flywheel. If you have a ZF-6 transmission (6 speed) then you have a single mass flywheel (one piece).
If it really is the pilot bushing going bad, you need to fix it ASAP before you ruin your input shaft, or worse the whole tranny. If it's just the throwout bearing, you can drive it till it pukes.
Well i got it in this am. The first guy thinks its the pilot bearing. The shop im going to will look at it again. I was hopeing id be able to drive it longer but i have the same concern as you that it will cause more damage inside. I guess it will be hard to really determin that it is the pilot or throw out bearing? It is a stocl truck.
When does the noise occur? If it only happen when you have tranny in gear stopped with the clutch pushed in, it is the pilot bearing. That requires IMMEDIATE attention so you don't toast the input shaft on the transmission. The throw out bearing can make noise at almost anytime, depending how bad it is getting. Mostly it will feel or sound like a grinding when starting to push the clutch in
Is it possible to take off the rectangle cover on the side of a manual trans. to inspect the clutch assembly? I have a chattering when letting out the clutch in 1st at a slow speed.
Well the noise varies. Some times there is no noise. I first noticed it when starting from dead stop in forward or reverse as you let the clutch up to engage. Yestereday i heard noise just pushing the pedal down when the tranny was not in gear. Now when i went to the shop the guy held down the peddle for awhile with the tranny in gear. It seemed to make more noise and get worse while he did that for a while. It got so bad that i allmost was not able to get it in gear to drive home. I think it get hot and doesnt work right. This am when i started up to go to the shop it shifted fine and i did not hear noise. Maybe the pilot bearing gets hot and then starts the problem?
Also wondering if the method of testing that he used is normall or is that a trick to make it seem like it is worse off? He seemed to hold down the clutch and have the tranny in gear for awhile to make it make noise.
thanks joe
yuppers i got a 2002 V10 6spd, throwout bearing bad clutch kit with flywheel resurface
1100-1155 here in Lincoln,NE. i just put here away for winter bought brand new truck! LoL put clutch in next spring
Ok men allways a problem. Took truck in to shop that was going to do the work. Now it will not make any noise at all and drives fine! This is a different shop then who heard and test drove it yesterday. So the man doesnt really want to work on it untill he can see the probelm. I can understand that. So now im not sure what to do? Drive it more untill it makes more noise and bring it back to them. Or i can go with the shop who clearly heard and noticed the problem, but who wants more money and i dont like quite as much? I guess my big concern is that it will do more damage to the tranny or something if i drive it more? I dont know why it is not makeing any noise today, even after 2 or 3 test drives? It had been clearly makeing noise for a week and then stoped now.
Any thoughts joe

My ZF6 would always chatter/squeak when first accelerating in 1st gear. There is no problem.
Well i will post up again. Will not make noise today on 4 seperate drives. Just a fluke i guess? Dont know why the pilot bearing will make noise and then quit? Any help i apprecatie it. Im going to drive it some more untill noise comes back and the shop can hear it. Joe
