Tire Chains on 33s

I just moved into the hills and expect to be seeing a lot more snow this year than I have in years past. So I wanted to get some tire chains for my 2000 f250 v10. The previous owner installed 33x12.5 r16.5 BFG MTs .No lift of any kind on the truck. Anyone tried this?

If it were me I would get rid of the wheels (go back to 16" wheels) and tires and go with something narrower in an A/T tire.

How bad is it supposed to get where you are?

For chains tighter is better....

If you are going to run them on the front axle, then I would carefully check the clearance with the chains on. I heard a story one time about someone doing some damage when they put chains on oversized tires!

Cable chains are useless, the best chains are VBar chains. If you care about your wheels, awlays bungee the tail, or it will thrash your wheel beyond repair Personaly, I put two bungees on each wheel to keep them tight, one is awlays on the tail.

Deflate the tire before putting on the chains then re-inflate the tires chains are tight as a drum now, no slipage. That how we do them on the ice racing cars. Double V bars are best.

good tip.
i am casually looking for chains for my truck. planning on some snowboarding trips up in the mountains and i am stuck with 2WD so i may need some "help"...
you say v-bar is the best?
does the shape of the actual links make a difference?
ive heard that diamond links are better than others, but i know absolutely nothing about chains.

Not too bad. Mostly my thinking is if this thing gets stuck I would need a small army (or a tractor) to push this thing out or up a hill. But all reports for this year are supposed to be terrible.

I think I will get a set for the rear and only use them if things get bad, I get stuck, or can't get up a hill. I think I will have enough clearance on the rear but on the front with turning and whatnot I would probably hit things I shouldn't. Oh and get beefy chain tighteners.

For the 2wd guy you might want to put some weight in the bed too...
