What Type of Tire Chain Works Best With E-150

I need to get some tire chains for my E-150. We usually don't get much snow, if any at all, but this year is the exception.

I see so many types of chains. There are regular cable chains, Z style cable chains, traditional link chains with tighteners, diamond style link chains, and I'm probably leaving out some others.

My E-150 124" short wheel base gets lousy traction on ice and packed snow. I don't know if there's any one type of chain that works best.

Not sure about the chains. My e250 does pretty well in the ice and snow with some decent tires......even with an open diff. How are your tires?

I have newer all season tires with a "traction A" rating that have less than 1100 miles on them. My garage is lower than the street so the driveway slopes uphill. When the driveway is icy I can't back out to the street - I just spin the tires.

This winter has been different from our usually mild ones. We seem to get snow or silver thaw every other week. We got 10 inches of snow last week that packed down into ice on the roads. It's still there.

I'm not dumb enough to try to drive with the tires I have in these conditions. I think when the roads thaw out I'll just buy some studded winter tires and run those for a few months rather than mess with chains.

sand and salt your driveway , chains are noisy and studs aren't much better.

I use these on my 2WD E-150 Chateau, RUD Grip 4x4, in what little snow and ice we get in Georgia, but also for slick off road use. They mount easy, tighten up well, and don't need much wheel well clearance. Pretty smooth as far as chains go. I had to detour up a steep hill and down the other side in our last decent snow, I was very impressed. Pick your tire size here, and place the order. I wouldn't say they were for heavy/frequent highway use, but great for intermittent use.

if all he needs them for is his driveway, cables are a lot lighter and quicker to install

The traction rating on tires has nothing to do with gripping power or the like. It's an objective rating on how well the tire skirts water in a controlled, straight stop.

Dad worked for the phone company, they used traditional chains, but cables I've seen are much easier to handle.

Those RUD 4X4 chains look great. They look better than the chains I've seen on Amazon. I need something to get around town with and in case I go somewhere like a medical appointment and it snows.

We've had 9 days of snow and ice but it's warming up tonight and the roads are turning to slush. Tomorrow I'm going out and look for chains in local stores and then decide.
