There was a cheap aftermarket wiper delay system that didn't delay the wipers installed and looked a lot like a bag of a$$ so I cut it off.
Looking back that was stupid.
Now the wipers don't work at all. I went through my Haynes but it doesn't go into detail about the wiring on the switch.
Here's what I have left. The white wire was cut and two wires added to each end a green and white. These went to the after market delay obviously the switch portion... Then there is a blue attached by jumper to a black with purple dots. Thats all that's changed to the switch wiring.
Next a red came from the delay and was fuse twisted into the fuse panel (you know wrapped around a fuse and shoved in...) Pulled that out and replaced the fuse. Then a black from the delay to a ground and a yellow (smaller gauge than the rest) with a clamp attached to the steering column...
If I connect the white and green and ground the blue I get a little life out of the thing but it popped the fuse so that wasn't right.
Before I burned the motor I thought I would ask to see if anyone else has run into a switch problem before.
Thanks guys for the help! If you need clarification let me know, trying to write this type of thing out while enjoying a fine Makers Mark is a little tough.
The factory wiper delay module installs inline between the harness & switch; it also comes
with a different switch, one that rotates to the left (from the OFF detent) to put the wipers
into variable-delay mode.
The module & switch look like so:
Without that delay module & special switch, the switch plugs directly into the harness.
Is there some reason you can't restore the wiring to its original state?
The only wires I would ground on a Ford are black....

It pretty much is back to factory minus the delay switch. I guess I will have to run backwards from the motor. Gonna try a few things tomorrow first. I'll keep you posted...
I want one of those. I am getting so tired of doing it manually. Friggin Seattle misting.
Getting both parts, and adding them to the dash is all that's required. One special step that can't be overlooked is the extra ground wire on the controller that must be attached to the metal under the dash, in order for the delay system to work.
Best 15 minute upgrade I ever did.
When I first got my truck, the PO had done some sort of surgery to the wiring under the
dash. I seem to recall a black/purple-dots wire being cut but I really don't remember, it was
close to 5 years ago.
Anyhow, what he did allowed the wipers to run in one speed only (nevermind what the
switch was set to) and they wouldn't park, turning off the switch immediately shut off the
wipers. He did this because of some problem with the motor (though I don't remember the
exact problem, prolly wouldn't park the wipers) and a JY motor fixed that (I put the wiring
back to original at the same time).
I sometime later installed one of those wiper delay modules, they can be gotten from 80-96
(or so) trucks & Broncos.
There's something nagging at me... 1980 is a one-year-wonder from an electrical
standpoint so maybe avoiding that year would be good. I don't exactly remember how far
into the 90s they go but my guess would be that, if you found one of those modules &
switches, it would likely work for ya.
Here's a quick way to get them working with a toggle switch. This will give you low speed operation only, but they will park like they are supposed to when you toggle the switch.
The wipers aren't part of the 1980 "One year wonder" wiring. The one year only *mainly* applies to the cluster printed curcuit and corrosponding plugin.
BTW, swapping an non-1980 cluster into an 1980 truck is very complex. It involves swapping 2 wires in the plug (17 & 18 IIRC*), and using the dash plaque and cluster from an 81-86.
I swapped an 85 cluster, dash plaque, and delay wiper switch/controller (governor) into my 80 model truck.
* info provided by 81explorer guy, can't recall his exact username, but all the older members know who I'm talking about.
Prolly 81-F-150-Explorer, I know who he is, he's one of the guys I bow to and is one of the industry experts here.
We're lucky to have him here and is one of the guys who I would expect to correct me when I'm wrong.
That's him, and you are so right. He is a very valuable member.
He looked the info up, and even he seemed to be surprised that it was as simple as *only* 2 wires between the 80, and 81-86. The rest of the changes were made within the printed curcuit itself.
There is so much hacking and jumpers under that dash I get dizzy just looking.
When I was trying to determine if it was the fuse panel I started to see a few discrepancies from the Hayens and the panel I have. I think it looks more like this
When the Haynes is showing something a little different (can't find a pic of it...) anyone know which is right?
