I know that some ford water pumps start weeping out a hole on the underside of the pump while they are running when they are going bad. Do they leak out of this hole at all when not running?
I have this new to me truck with a 400, I can't tell if the water is coming from the hose or from the pump itself, but it leaks down onto the balancer underneath, then onto the ground.
I first noticed the leak when she was warming up one day, but today I topped off the radiator (while not running) and water started coming out from under the pump...

Have newly bebuilt 400 with less then 200 miles..when new weiand water pump leaking from seal hole... replaced under warrenty this weekend...to answer your question..no..should not leak at all
When it is running the system is under more pressure..so it will leak more..but like I said...it should not leak at all..wether its running or not..bad seal..:-)
I guess I am not stating my question clear enough, I know that it is leaking either from the inlet or the weep hole it is too close to tell, without tearing everything out, in which caseI will have to drain the coolant and won't see where it leaks when I add coolant.
I was trying to see if they were designed to leak (when wearing out) only while running, or will they leak when not running as well?
My question is irrelevant now, I will have to tear into it one way or another. I checked to see that the hose clamps were tight, and they seemed on there pretty good. Just have to wait for the on-base auto-hobby shop to open on thursday.

to answer your original question clearly YES they can leak when not running
remove the water pump. you'll see the hoses if they are leaking and the shape off the water pump. Water pump for the 351C/351M and 400 are cheap if your doing it yourself.
Done deal, found that the leak was in two places, the lower hose, and the lower weep hole on the pump were both leaking upon closer inspection with radiator removed.
The new pump looks funny being the only ford blue item in the engine bay... painted it just to keep it from rusting.
