I received an email from Ford Racing and signed up for a test drive where Ford comes and picks me up. Scheduled for 1-13-11 @ 4 pm. Received call and email confirming it.
Then today I receive a phone call saying that they overbooked in my area and they are canceling my Test Drive. I am disappointed but they say they are sending me a hat and entering me to win $2000.
My test drive is set for 11/29/10 at 10 am. Hopefully the same thing won't happen. Looking forward to seeing what it drives like. The turbo's don't bother me. Have one in a 1987 Chrysler and at 23 years old and 61K it still works great. Just run good oil and a quality filter. Last work truck with a 7.3 diesel and turbo had over 325K and still had the original turbo.
I signed up too, but never heard back. Granted I don't live very close to one of the areas, but figured what they heck...
I'm sure Ford's people are grinning from ear to ear seeing all of the interest in wanting to test drive the new EB trucks. I wonder if this early enthusiasm will continue at the dealerships with people buying EB's vs just wanting to check them out.
I for one am only at the "want to check it out" stage.
I drove the Ecoboost at Fontana Speedway Saturday, WOW!
Twin turbos mounted right to the exhaust manifolds.
No lag.
Out-dragged a 6.2L on their dragstrip (I drove both)
Drove one pulling a trailer, did just fine.
I'd buy one of these motors.

I have drove one as well and it has lag. But it's 10x better than my 6.0 as far as lag goes though.
Is the lag the drive by wire delay or turbo lag. Both the 2006 5.4L and the current 2009 5.4L both have a delay when you mash it hard. On the 2006 I had a Evolution tuner that made a big difference. Just to much money right now to do it on the 2009.
that I don't know but it's there. Because mine has a long lag of 1.5 -2 seconds, I made sure that I noticed it on my test drive. On the ecoboost I would say less than .5 second which I assume is turbo lag.
Wonder how there could be a wire delay on the 5.4 ? If electrons move at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second) there is no way that you could feel lag due to a the time effect of electron flow in a piece of wire a few feet long. The 5.4's lag must be due to something else.

So other than the minor lag what was your overall impression with new powertrain? I'm chomping at the bit to drive one for myself!

It towed the 6700 lb trailer as good as my diesel does. At 50 mph was running 2k rpm. I saw the tach go as high as 2500.
The lie-o-meter showed 8.5 mpg while towing. I reset it before I towed. I only got to go a mile or so, so it wasn't a good test.
Acceleration was good. The elec steering felt good. (I used to hate those old twin I beam Ford's where you felt like you were floating down the road because you couldn't feel anything).
As soon as EPA numbers come out and someone does some towing tests so that I can see the results I will be more than likely ordering one.
Of all the drving reports I've read(and I've read them all) you suggest T lag more than anyone else. Where you looking for it... looking too hard?
Yes, I was looking for it, because if it had lag like my 6.0 I didn't want it. It's there but small.
I remember one of the other reports I read mentioned "minimal lag" and that's what I would call it. It's not enough to get me ran over crossing an intersection like with my Power stroke nor is it enough to keep me from buying one but when some one reports that it has none, they are wrong. I would guess it as .1 to .5 seconds. Not a lot too most (unless you are a drag racer) but nevertheless it's there

Thanks for the quick summary, that says a lot to compare it to your 6.0 as it is certainly not lacking in the torque department. I agree about the old twin I beam or twin traction beam in the 4x4's, I had a lifted 95 F-150 and it tended to wander on the road a bit. Ditto on the towing, not a long enough test, I'm sure the average mpg would have risen and stabilized after a longer duration. This sounds like a promising new powertrain! I was considering a Superduty from my current 03 Supercrew but the tow ratings are up considerably from mine....7100 to 11,200 for the ecoboost with 6.5' bed and max tow pkg...max gcwr is 12,500 on mine and 17,100 in max tow config!!
I didn't notice any more lag than with the 6.2 that I drove. With the new drive-by-wire systems they can program a 'lag' or progressiveness in there to reduce shock on the drivetrain.
I really, really want to see the price and mileage numbers. They were VERY careful not to say anything useful about that which worries me a bit.
Kind of like a drug dealer's first free taste.
