hi fellas! names oneal......need some help. lol. Just bought a 2000 Ford F-250 Super Duty CC 4x4 V10. I know gas mileage aint great, but after a trip to houston, i went 164 miles on a tank a gas. Thats 6.8 miles to the gallon. Im not looking for masive gains, but i was hoping i could get it back to at least 12.......any suggestions? plugs have just been changed, so has front shocks, everything else is stock. Defitnelythinking of switching to highway tires since i dont do any off roading and minimal towing...
you definitely should be doing better than that...id check all the filters especially fuel filter, how big are the off road tires and what gears are you running...is the truck lifted/ any mods already?

im guessing the gears are stock. tires are terra mud grapplers. came with the truck but they pretty bald. lol.....no lift or mods. oh, and its a california emissions truck.....if that helps any. i heard the system could be removed and that could also help....
Yeah they need to be motorcrafts. The triton motors are picky about that. If they aren't then the truck is sure to be running crappy soon. I know my truck is different ('01 4.6 f150) but as soon as i pass 2000 rpms cruising highway i can almost watch the fuel guage needle drop
I traded in a 2001 F250 V10 with 67000 miles on it and I was getting 11-12mpg pretty consistently. Loaded or unloaded didn't seem to matter. I seem to remember that the couple times I pulled my trailer that it dropped below 10 mpg. I had the spark plugs changed at around 62000 by the stealer and it cost almost $500. The V10 is known for spitting spark plugs. R&R procedure must be strictly followed and the torque is something like 14 inch pounds, NOT foot. 2 or 3 threads of contact.
There is more to buying a used truck than putting the keys in and going. Maybe it was done maybe not. Check your spark plugs change if needed, Change all the fluids and filters and most of all stay out of the gas 70+ mph will start sucking fuel. Also check your brakes maybe you have one dragging some, check the slide pins clean and lube them. I wouldn't take someones word that it was serviced without checking the fluids and filters first.
6.8 mpg is pretty bad, my lowest was just last week towing 16,000k @ 65 and that was 7.6 mpg. Check out the v10 section in the stickeys at the top of the threads. Welcome to the site.
welll i can almost tell you that the plugs arent motorcraft. and the only filter i changed on the truck was the trans. filter. the other filters i didnt.....i'll defitnely get on the filters idea and the spark plugs. the factory cat is still on the truck, which i intend to change as well......does the california emissions thing mean any thing? i live in louisiana and was told i dont need it....
Well keep reading the forums here... there is lots of good stuff.
Does the truck have any mods (tuner, exhaust, intake, big tires etc...?)
If i were you, i would change the filters and fluids starting with the air filter, then oil and oil filter, then fuel filter, also flush the brakes while you are under there (won't hurt mileage, but it will help braking)
As others have mentioned, check for dragging brakes. Also make sure your front hubs are not locked.
Also, i would install motorcraft plugs, but i would read up on here about how to do it. Then do it EXACTLY that way, buy or borrow a torque wrench if you have to... You don't want to deal with a blown out plug.
Is your check engine light on? Even if it isn't have the codes read.
Do not remove your cat. converter... Replace it if it is clogged.
Wow even my 460 didn't do that bad on the highway, lol. Why do they only need motorcraft plugs? I have ngk platinums in my 5.4, I haven't seen a difference in mileage?
Btw, new trucks and cars don't need cats, the tuning can be dialed in so that cats are nothing but a weight gain and federal idiocracy. I removed my cat, and if we really need them, why do I smell regular exhaust, not gas rich? Plus exhausts sound a lot better without them, just my .02
