The modular engine series (4.6, 5.4, 6.8 Liter) are very specific and need motorcraft parts to run best...Try changing the plugs and all the filters and let us know where you stand

I heard somwhere that on the older motors if the o2 sensors go bad it will burn a lot more fuel. You might want to have the computer re-flashed by the dealer in case the old owner put some performance flash or something in it.

I had a friend with a van with a v-10 and he was getting horrible mileage and he thought something was wrong with the engine so he sold it really cheap to anther friend of mine, and he replaced the o2 sensors and it fixed the problem. He was pissed off when he found that out. Not saying that is your problem but with the cost of fuel nowadays it might be worth the price of the sensors to find out. The dealer might be able to update the computer as well, it shouldn't cost that much.

i'll give that a shot too then.....i guess spend the money now cause i really dont want to get rid of the truck. what abt this ethanol thing? i read in a few forums that the ethanol in the gas makes our trucks burn like all hell.....i will say tho i notice a gas consumption difference when i put Shell gas versus Chevron. I run plus in the truck and all my vehicles and i seem to get more out of the Shell gas than the chevron or others....any theories?

only replace the forward 02s if you decide to replace them. they're the ones that have any effect on how the motor runs. and if you know of a place around you with ethanol free gas id definitely get it next fill up. i get a lot better mileage with it. your shell station might be e-free. i think the one around here has some e-free

The difference in the mileage with ethanol is only about 10%.

Your motor is set up to run 87 octane gas. Putting in higher octane is a waste of money. That may account for some of your poor mileage your engine isn't going to run efficiently if its being fed the wrong octane. Run 87 octane fuel.

well, i filled up with exxon 87 today just to see how it runs. i also bought motorcraft oil 5w30 and a motorcraft filter. gonna change the oil tommorow and check the plugs.....may swap them out for the motorcraft plugs. is there a difference in which one i buy as far as nickle plated or whatever the other one is called?
