as a noob i've tried to stay away from posting and looked hard for my solutions but i just cant find it.
i just recently bought a 1999 f350 not dually, with a 7.3diesel with a 6speed. as everybody else before me i'm haveing issues with the front end and from my research i'm pretty sure it's the needle bearing but who knows. since i dont care for the 4x4 i had an idea. can i remove the half shafts, diff and front driveshaft and keep. i figured that if that fixes my problem and looses weight. it's a win win for me. has anybody tried that?
Not sure what the issues you're having are, but if your problem is a needle bearing it's less work to replace it than it is to gut the front driveline. What are the symptoms?
i'm getting a rubbing sound when i turn. i bought the truck with the problem, so i don't know how long it's been going on. the hub probably needs to be replaced as well. i don't want to go through all the work just to do it again in 100,000 miles. i'd rather just simplify the front and not have to worry about it. all i'm trying to find out is if removing the axels and the shaft in the front will effect how the front operates.
auto or manual hubs?
The only parts that you may save on future replacement by removing the axles will be axle u-joints, the needle bearing at the back of the hub assembly, and the hub locks. Ball Joints and hub assemblies are still going to wear the same as if you left the 4x4 operational.
so i did it yesterday. it took me about 2 hours for the first one and about an hour for the second one. now with axels gone the noises are gone and the truck runs smooth.
but first i went to a mechanic who has done lots of thoes and he told me that if i wanted to keep the 4x4 i shouldn't use anything but dealer parts cause if i do i'll be doing it again in 30k to 50k miles and the estimate he gave me just for parts was anywhere from 800 to 1500.
pulling the axels out didn't cost me a thing and i have a great running truck.
if you dont use your 4x4 i recomend it.
Yeah, get a 4x4 and rip out the front end!
What are you thinking? No. This is a stupid mod. Get a 2wd. Oh wait, you have already ruined yours into one.
