Rough idle

OK, so about 4 days ago, my truck started shaking when at idle. Doesn't matter if it's in Park or any other gear. Don't notice any other problems other than at idle. I have had this truck for less than a year, so I have no idea when any tune-up stuff was done last. I figured since my daughter works at a dealership that has Lincoln and Mercury vehicles and gets a discount I would have her price out a tuneup. They wanted $2.20 a piece for Motorcraft plugs, which I can get for $1.19 at Schucks. They also wanted over $100 in labor to install the plugs, wires, cap and rotor! I can only imagine what they want without her discount. Looks like it's time for a driveway tuneup.

My truck is doing the same thing and it is because of a bad EGR valve, could be the same thing for you.

How did you figure out it was the EGR valve causing your problem? Were you getting any codes? I just checked codes on mine. KOEO was clear. KOER gave me a 632. Oops, forgot to push the OD cancel button. Ran it again and it was clear.

I did get a code saying my EGR was bad, but here is another thread showing how to test it.

OK, finished the tuneup. Old plugs looked almost like brand new, wires looked fine but who knows. The cap and rotor were pretty trashed. Verified the timing. It was only advanced about 9 degrees, so I bumped it up to 10 where it's supposed to be. It helped the idle some, but it still shakes. It used to idle so smooth you couldn't even feel it was running, now it shakes enough you can see the passenger seat shaking around. I'm still getting all clear when I pull the codes. I will see if I can check out the EGR valve. Is there anything else that could be causing this that I can check out?

Rough idle

I have similar troubles. After tuneups (wires, plugs, coil, cap, rotor), a new EGR valve and position sensor, map sensor, ECT sensor, IAC, distributor module and stator, computer, several gas treatments, an injector power flush, cleaning the throttlebody, checking the TPS voltage, fuel pressure, fuel and EEC relays, and a check for vacuum leaks, I still can't find the problem. The timing was reset (hopefully correctly, but might be off a little) after a new timing chain about 3 years ago. If it is off a few degree's will it hurt the idle any? Could I have one bad injector causing this? If it's an injector, how do you test each one? Oh, the oxygen sensor was replaced about 4 years ago as well. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Half of my drivability problems were cured on my '93 F150 5.0 with a full plate block off of the EGR (getting no codes either) , a thorough cleaning of the IAC and the biggest was the moving of the PCV hose from the back of the #8 intake runner to the center of the intake manifold. Too much crud going to one cylinder only causing the plug to foul a bit. I have also heard that it can cause a hole in the piston and I didn't want to chance that. Odd that Ford would design this system this way. I now have a bit if an off idle falter which I am attributing to the TPS but will wait thill it stops snowing to get at it. Come to think of it, the throttle position that it falters at is the same position that I cruise at. What could that do to fuel milage I wonder?
