I live in Florida and will be driving up to the mountains in Maggie Valley, North Carolina to spend New years Eve up there. Up in the mountains in that time they do have snow. I belive they clean the roads pretty regularly. I also wonder is the roads ice up. I drive a 2007 5.4 FX2. So i don't have 4x4. My question is should I get snow chains or cables? Any advise I need to know before? Anyone drive in that area have any tips? I know some roads are steep. Thanks...
It will really all depend on the weather at the time. It could be fine and clear and it could have 6" of snow on the ground. I would suspect you will be fine with nothing but I could not say for sure until the time gets closer and see how the winter is turning out.
Yeah I guess it does depend. I see the older post where some people say to place the chains in the front for steering and braking. Some people say to place the chains in the rear for tranction and for braking so the rear end doesnt swing out from behind you. I think I will get a pair for the rear. I live in florida so it will be a one time thing.
I know that the roads are steep where I will be going so I am a little worried about traction.
For what you need to do, I would wait until you're in the general area and if there's any significant snow. You could pick up some chains at a local parts store or pick up a 4 or 5 tubes of sand (60 - 75 lbs each). Put them in the back of the bed and drive sensibly. You'll be fine if you've got decent tread.
Yeah I saw some people on other treads said to get sand bags. I just dont want to haul them from south florida to north carolina. I think I would rather buy some chains online now and spend 100 bucks rather then being up there in the snowtrying to hunt some down. What do u people think about where to put them. Front or back???
put them in the rear. also you will want to put weight in the bed to help.every home depot or lowes sells them, so you can pick them up closer to the snow/ mountains. then keep the receipt and return them on the way home
I agree with Dano. Stop in Charlotte, NC on the way up and pick up the chains and 2-3 bags of sand. I am sure your friend can find a use for the sand if you want to leave it with him for the trip home.
