i was just and the local junkyard and spotted a 79 lincoln mark 5 with what i think is a 9inch rear with disc brakes. my question is can i use the parts on my truck 9 inch. i know the bolt pattern is different but ive heard you can use different rotors, like the fronts off f150. my question is how can i deffinitivly spot a ford 9 inch? and are any of the parts useful?
im pretty sure it was a nine. no inspection cover. but are any of the parts of any use? i hear their kinda rare and if there's anything i can use i might as well jump on it.
Why don't you just use the door jamb code to find out what is in there. Why do you really want the 9in? The 8.8 in your truck is plenty strong for pretty much anything you'll throw at her.
I don't know that you could use the parts in yours. I believe the splines were different as well as the measurement from end to end.
If it is relatively close in the end to end measurement, you could swap in the whole axle, and live with the visual difference, or use spacers, which is not considered very safe by some.
You are contemplating this just so you could have disk brakes on your nine right? I wonder if someone makes a conversion kit or the like.
There are probably more variables I am not thinking of and I am sure someone else will point them out.
is was more thinking of using the disc brake parts. like the baking plate and calipers? i heard you can use the front discs of a newer f150 and just get the stock axel flange machined down a 1/16 of an inch to fit the rotors. anyone have experience?
