Front brake job

I am trying to remove the front rotors on my '97 F-150 4x4. It is not the "Off Road" package. How in the world do they come off? I've seen some you just pound off, but these have a nut in the hub (I'm guessing because of the front axle assembly). I called a mechanic and he thought you might just have to pound them off, but I'm not so sure. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

The disc on many 4x4's are mounted to the hub with the wheel studs. Yes, you could pound them off, but, a better way is to get the proper hub nut socket(must have to set wheel bearings). This will remove the whole unit, hub and rotor, remove the first nut, there should be some type of "locking" ring next. Then there will be a second nut that holds the tension on the wheel bearings, remove this and the outer bearing should come out. Grab hold of the hub/rotor and pull it off, you might have to wiggle it a bit, be very careful not to damage the spindle. If you need to remove the rotor from the hub, press the studs out of the rotor and "split" the hub from the rotor. Install in the reverse order, make sure your wheel bearings are set correctly, and if there is a tab or indexing finger on the keeper ring, that it lines up correctly before installing the second(outer) nut. Hope this is correct for your year! Have a 79 with manual hubs. Chuck P.
