66 F350

My oldest Son has a 66 F350. It has DRW with 6 hole wheels. The wheels are snap ring with 750x17 tires. Does anyone on the forum know if there are any 6 hole wheels that are not snap ring that would fit on the truck? He would like to have more choices in tires.

He's pretty much out of luck. Ford and Dodge were the primary users of this bolt pattern and pretty sure Ford was the last to use it in 1966. 1967 and up is all the regular 8 bolt pattern.

Are these the lock ring or split rim? Cause the split rim is scrap steel as no one will touch them and not worth your life to change tires. Lock ring ones aren't much better. Some small town shops will still change them but once apart most have bad rust damage to reuse.

If he really likes this truck, best bet would be to get a 61-64 F-250 front axle and 67-79 F-350 rear axle then he could use regular 8 bolt DRW rims and common 16" radial tires.

My parents have a 1965 M-350 with the 17" split rims and would pretty much be parked if the tires wore out due to the work involved.

The truck has the lock ring rims and the tires will run for awhile yet.. The truck only has 54 thousand miles and was bought from the original owner, who took very good care of it, so the body is real nice. I guess we will start looking for the replacement axles you mentioned. Thanks for the information.

If you really need to change a tire, and your from stoon, let me know. Ive changed hundreds of "widow maker" rims, and if you know what your doing, and what to look for, they are reasonabley safe to work on.

They are a pain in the ***, and I would recommend the upgrade as well.

Aren`t the pre 66`s a straight front axle and the 66 up Twin I Beams on the F250/350? If so there`s just too much to do this change over. The rear axle should work ok tho.

The truck is registered as a 66 but possible it is a 65, maybe, as it has the straight front axles. I guess in that case we are lucky as a change over is then feasible.

I as well will risk my life to change tires. Might cost you some beer tho. Just get them clean and make sure interlock, throw a chain(s) around and hold off on the beer until your done

The 65-66 F-350 are straight axle trucks. They are pretty much a 1964 carried over as they use the 61-64 cabs. The 65-66 F-100/250 use an entirely different frame and cab.

A co-worker of mine nearly was killed by a split rim years ago. It threw him 8 feet, just grazed the top of his head. It still knocked him out and the ring was inbedded in the 18 foot roof. It snapped the safety chains. To me it's not worth it messing with split rims.

My Dad's 65 was purchased new by his father and has 66k miles.

The only real safe way to play with these rims are in a cage.

Im glad your buddy is ok, but if you actually know what to look for, and how to properly change them, they arent that unsafe to change. too many guys that work on them know how to change them, but dont know what to look for in the flaws, the bad rust, etc. and thats when it really gets unsafe.

I learned how to do thes from a guy that has done tires for 30= years, and hes only seen a few of them come apart, and only due to the guy working on them being a nimrod!

Now airbrake pods with Spring-loaded brake. Those will kill you if you don't know what you're doing

According to NumberDummy-Ford Parts Guru...
''1964/1966 F350's have a solid front axle. The Twin I Beam front end came along on F350's in 1967. ''

My 66 F350 has 16 inch wheels. They are what I call split ring as the ring is on the outside on the front and comes off with a tire bar. They are 6 lug rims. As far as I know these came on it new.

My son is lucky in the fact that the tires on the truck are still in good condition so he has some time to look for some donor axles. I know of quite a few one tons that could be donors for the rear axle but finding a donor for the front axle could be a different story. I don't ever remember a F250 from those years around here.
