I decided (even though it will probably only last long enough to go around the block twice) I'm goin to turn my 390 into a 428CJ. I was wondering, other than heads, what else will I need? I know they had special heads but not sure what else. Will you please inform me what other parts I'll need to turn my 390 into a 428CJ?
For the most part you cannot bore a 360/390 block enough to get the 428's 4.13" bore.
For a "352" (driver's side casting ID on block) it's darn near 1 in 40 can go 80 over.
A reverse "105" block it's about 1 in 25 can go 80 over.
In the long run it's better to bore the block as little as possible to clean it up and just use a stroker kit from a company like Survival Motorsports. The 445 Prison Break kit is extremely popular these days for stroking a 390.
I knew bout the crank, but not the flex plate. And I'm told my 390 is just barely strong enough to go .80 over. What kinda breathing am I looking at here? Some guy said I want a huge intake and a 800cfm carb for CJ.
A sonic test is the way to check if a 390 block can go .080 over. You can do a drill bit test thru the freeze plugs, but in the end it won't tell you much.
Edelbrock heads outflow iron CJ heads
As for intake any good quality product will do. Whether an iron CJ intake, aluminum Police Interceptor, Edelbrock RPM, or old school Edelbrock Streetmaster, Offy Port-o-Sonic, or newer repros from Blue thunder.
