Have a 1997 f-250 HD 4x4 with the 5.8 v8 351 windsor . I have 271,550 on it and just started to have a problem with the idler pulley , it was getting relly loud on cold starts and driving down the road . called ford and got a new pulley with thr t-30 star bolt . replaced the pulley and the damn thing still screaming . sprayed wd-40 on the Idler pulley and it stop . the belt is about 2 months olds so i dont belive its the belt due to the fact that it stop screaming after i sprayed it with wd-40 . Im going nutz trying to figure out why a new idler pully would still scream ??????? PLEASE HELP !!!
I have tried two different belts (Dayco and another off-brand) that both started squealing when the outside temp got low, then I tried a Gates belt and have had no squeal at all. My idler and tensioner pulleys are both perfect.
My scenario in the past...
Idler pully making noise...Replaced idler pully, replaced, with same issue.
Sprayed pully, noise stopped for a minute. Then came back.
Come to find out that when I sprayed 'the pully', I also lubed the belt, causing the seizing tensioner pully to slide smooth. Lube wore off, tensioner pully started to grab belt.
Replaced the tensioner pully and all was happy once more.
Moral of the story, Noises from the front of an engine with many pully's can be decieving.
Grab an arm's length of hose, and place one end in ear and the other carefully pointed to various places to locate noise.
I had stripped out the old pulley bolt and the one i got from ford came with one .
I had also check the tensioner pulley it seemed ok i was going to try and change the belt to see if maybe thta would help just not sure where to go from here
