The plug on top is for the fuel heater. Water in fuel light hooks to the bottom cannister, or some of the one piece filters have that built in.

On some of them the return line hooks into a barbed fitting right beside the schrader valve. At least, the one I swapped the return lines and o-rings in tonight did.

ok for the top plug does the old engine(85) have a fuel heater wire i can plug into 87's filter?
and i think i see the water in fuel on the bottom
I have the barbed fitting so i guess i'll put he return line on that.
Now theres just one more "thing" i don't know about about. Its the last of the three. from the front to the back it it goes Scharder, Barbed return fitting, and last but not least the mystery black "thingus", can anyone help out with what this is

This is the top of an 88 7.3 filter/seperator which is what you seem to be describing. 87 still had the old style spin on cartridge with an inline fuel heater.

yup thats what i have
So does that mean i should just use my 85's filter or are there any advantages to running the 7.3. Will my engine/truck even have the fuel heater to plug in and vacuum sensor to plug in

Yes I'd use the 85. If it's the 85, NO, you wont have the fancy plug for the 7.3 filter head and no plug for the vacuum switch. Personally I prefer the 6.9 seperator because it's finer micron, alot cheaper, and is a simple spin on, no 2 part job, plus not all the other crap to leak or fail on the head as you know. I do recommend a seperate water seperator in the stock location to capture any water that might get in the fuel.

My filter has that same thing you pictured but is no "2-part job" - it's just one big filter. It still has a drain and water sensor on the bottom too. It does not leak anywhere, and I just had it off yesterday to check for dirt and rust inside it. But I do not know how expensive it is, as I have never changed it.

Having the 7.3 filter head gives you some options other than the 2 part stock filter.

The price ranges from $37-43 at Napa. Of course you can find them cheaper elsewhere. I get my 6.9 filters for $11. Tough to beat.

I think mine is a Fram filter, at least that's all I could make out of it (it is painted over in black almost entirely), would that be any cheaper than those NAPA 3617 filters?

It would but your getting what you pay for. If I were you I'd change that fram out for a Napa or Baldwin. Far more superior. It seems the fram been on there awhile so it's probably time anyways.
