This being my first diesel, I'm not sure how it should sound. The motor starts right up and seems to run well, but is very "clattery", sounds like all the rockers are loose at idle. I noticed though that when I accelerate the motor sound changes drasticaly, sounds deep and much more quiet, like a big block gasser...
When warm at idle, if I push in the throttle advance lever on the drivers side of the IP, it quiets down and sounds pretty smooth...
No smoke at startup or idle, somew light gray smoke when I get on it in 3rd gear and low rpm...
I have watched a bunch of those videos trying to get a feel for how it should sound, but kinda hard to get a good feel on a video. Should the idle quiet way down when this mechanical light load advance lever is pushed in? Should it sound all clattery at idle? My timing marks are set about a quarters width apart towards advance on the pump and housing...
2) You should also have the pump properly timed. Please refer to the manufacturers
timing information for complete timing instructions. Most 6.9 and 7.3L applications,
when properly timed, have the timing mark advanced (toward the drivers side of the
vehicle) approximately 1/8 inch off the engine timing mark.
I thought advanced was timing mark toward passenger side???
1/4 in is a long ways, none of mine has ever had to be that far.
It is possible that you are advanced enough that the cold advance is basically over rode and you still have the powerstroke rattls even warm.
If you think it is hard to listen to a video and tell much try listening to this forum. lol

Hahha, not a quarter inch, the width of a quarter the coin, about 1/32"
If it isn't smoking, and runs fine driving, you're most likely good. This is my first diesel as well, and folks have pointed out they are LOUD, and the IDIs don't sound like any other diesel.
Mine made a clanking noise I'd never heard the other morning at start up. Thought I broke something, but it was just sucking the bottom of the tank (gauge hits E at half, and who knows what sludge is in there). Filled it up and added a double shot of diesel kleen yesterday, fired up like usual and drove for 6 hours on the highway and mountain roads today without a hiccup.

He is using advanced as in moved toward, not as in timing advance. The most I've advanced (moved toward passenger side) was the width of the line. An eighth of an inch is quite a lot in terms of timing on these pumps.
Ok, after more research, it seems the lever on the drivers side of the pump retards the timing when it is pushed in. So, since my engine quieted nicely when I pushed it in, I decided that the timing should be retarded.
I moved the IP mark to one mark width to the drivers side of static, and now the motor runs really nice and quiet. No smoke at idle, very little on hard acceleration, seems to have decent power and has a good sound to it. Also, now when I push the level in, instead of running better it runs worse and kinda shakes, so I think I may have found a sweet spot. Time will tell!
When the cold start advance is on it should have the powerstroke rattle that goes away when the motor reaches 112 degrees. The one line width will vary from vehicle to another but on mine is always where I start at and is real close.
