does anyone know what parts would have to be changed on a 2000 Explorer 5.0 to operate with a 93 mustang wiring and computer, or a ford racing setup. looking to replace tired strait 6 in my 78. also would like to keep emissions, 75 is the cutoff and I'm not putting money into the original setup for something this old. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you
f-150 4x4 gets used around the farm to haul fire wood, plow snow, and go to the cabin. Is there a reason I wont be happy with it? I already have the explorer as a parts vehicle. I bought it wrecked for the trans to fix a friends, and that paid for the whole parts truck. What would your sugestion be?
I just don't want to spend alot to put the smog punp back in and all the piping to the manifold and catalitic converter. for a motor that is on its way out. it has benn vey dependable but lately, thing are just starting to fall apart. It was my pap's truck and would like to use it a little more regular.
The 5.0 can perform as well the I6 at truck duties but it needs more rpm to do it, so if the '78 has some gearing or you have access to 3.73-4.10 gears for it(assuming relatively stock sized tires) you should be fine. If however the truck has something like 3.08 gears you will be disappointed, the 5.0 is a 90lb weakling until the revs are up, with this motor the usefull powerband begins at 2500rpm.
To use the Explorer 5.0 with a mutang EEC you will need a standard 5.0 distributor to replace the EDIS module, that's about it.
also the intake air temp sensor on exp. is in the air box w the m.a.f.
you will have to drill and tap the drivers side front runner for it if using a mustang harness.no big deal I have done it lots of times when swapping exp. intake onto mustangs.also make sure sure injestor connections are the same and not the later different style connector.
Just remember that the times you really need some torque, put it in 4LOW and it'll be plenty of motor to do the job, especially "around the farm" type stuff. It just won't win any races though
It is not just a farm truck and that does not make it exempt. It still gets used around the farm but I would like to drive it more often. Threre are no dummy inspection stations in my area that would put a sticker on the truck, just because of emissions. I know what I want to do is possible.
Thank you for some real info. The guys at painless wiring said it would never work. I question why? Is there any other sensers or parts that might need to be changed?
I don't know what part of PA you are from or how it differs from area to area. But I know in my county, anything older than 85 just gets a "visual check" for emissions. And I've never had a problem getting through one of those, and I don't even have a smog pump or a cat. I know I shouldnt be able to pass, but it seems when it's just a visual check only, some guys are pretty relaxed. The one thing I do know for sure though is that if you keep it under 5000 miles a year you are exempt from emissions. Do you plan on driving it more than 5k a year?
Is the plug on the injector itself different on the newer ones. So I would need diff injectors, diff distributor, and change location intake air temp. That sounds pretty simple to me. It will already fit where I want to put it and I don't have to make motor mounts to locate it. No problems to think of but possibly wiring. Can anyone else verify the less than 5000mi exemption for smog, because I have not heard that. And does that still need a "visual check"? I have gone to as many inspection stations as I feel comfortable, and they all tell me I need the crap for the visual. They never said anything about it having to work though.
This is the PA website for emissions. Put in your county, year and type of vehicle. It tells you specific test for your year. It goes on to state that new vehicles and vehicles driven under 5000 miles may be exempt from emissions.
