I have a 2001 Excursion, and the drivers rear caliper is leaking. Would you recomend a rebuilt one from a parts house? Or rebuilding it? Rebuild kit is only 17 bucks. Also the other side? It isnt leaking yet, and shows no issues, rebuild? replace?
If you have the time why not rebuild. The only diff is doing it yourself, or paying a tad more for rebuilt.
The calipers are fine to replace on one side. I just replaced one of my back ones last week. When taking off the old one take apart the brake line just past the rubber hose, and then do the work on the bench. I had to learn the hard way with more fluid all over and a broken banjo bolt.
It is the rotors if you need to replace one you replace both.
Pop out the pistons and see what the bore looks like. If it is not pitted then rebuild it. If it is toast get a quality rebuild like Bendix. I took some rebuilds off my old F350 because it was pulling to the left. Come to find out that the rebuilder had sandblasted the inside of the bores till it looked like rough cast iron. The Bendix calipers were good quality and they came with new pistons as well. I would pop the pistons on rebuilds just to make sure they are good rebuilds.
Well, I took it apart last night. There was no rebuilding of the left rear. The pad has spit out and the phonolic pistons were nearly completely spit out, and the bottom piston was broken. One of the slide pins is rusted and hung up. I think I am going to replace the mounting bracket due to the pin being siezed. I cant wait to see what the right side has in store for me tonight. BTW, my old 2500 chevy 4x4 FRONT brakes were not this Beefy!
Because the slide pin siezed, the calipers did not slide as the pad wore, so the pistons hyper extended and one came out so far it cocked in its bore....
Sounds like pitting may not have been the source of the leak. I need to fix a stuck slide on my Excursion and I would like to do it before going to FL but I may not have time to deal with it. The pads are not worn completely out but they are not even from right to left.
I know it is cheaper to do one side but I wouldn't. I can earn money back a lot easier than I can regenerate my body parts. I got some from ORiley and they were gold colored and you can tell that there is some sort of plating.

I have one held at the parts house. I will decide when I pull it. the Hawk pads should be in tomarrow or Friday.
